Setting the display resolution on my TV

I have Laptop with an external HDMI port, I connected my laptop to my TV via HDMI and it worked fine, the only problem was the TV was set at the same resolution as my Laptop which is a lowly 1368x768 and I want the TV to be full screen at 1920x1080.

In the display properties it shows the TV as 'Sony' but the display resolution is greyed out and I can't adjust it. Any ideas? I would like like to watch one my Sherlock Holmes DVD's tonight.

edit:
My video chipset is Intel's mighty 4 series mobile chipset which on investigation would appear to support 1920x1080.

Just a wild guess, but have you switched of the laptop display, so only the tv shows the desktop?

That sort of worked but the issue I have now is when the TV is set to 1080 the desktop doesn't quite seem to fit for some reason but it's nearly there.

your drivers will have an overscan option hidden somewhere to extend the display
