I have a Huawei B535 ready to set up and a 'blank' EE data SIM, which needs activating/topping up before use. I understand from EE that the SIM must be inserted first before it can be topped up, but I'm not sure what to do with the router - should I insert the SIM and then connect the router via ethernet to my laptop, for example, in hope that it will be recognised and I can then go to the EE site to top up the SIM?

I can't load up the SIM in another device first because all the phones in the house use nano SIMS and the router needs a micro SIM.

This may be a rudimentary question but this is the first LTE router I've owned.

I could probably call EE and buy data that way, but the prospect of hanging on the phone for aeons fills me with dread.

Thanks in advance.

I understood that the SIM could only be activated once inserted into a device. Don't know if it makes a difference but it's a PAYG data SIM. Obviously if I can activate it online first (I already have an EE account), then all will be well.

I think what they mean is the SIM can only be activated if it’s actually able to contact the mobile network, so it has to be inserted into a device to do that. Whether you type the activation code in before or after it makes contact with the mobile network is neither here nor there.
