Ive got a PC, my mate has one as well. We want to connect them together and play some games. I dont have a clue how to do this but it cant be too hard right?
firstly, do you have network cards in both machines? (please dont ask what a network card is )
if its just going to be you and your friend, buy a crossover cable from a local pc shop. dont worry about them too much, just ask for a crossover cable and the guy at the shop will know what you mean.
in regards to subnets, dont worry about them either . Basically, for you and your friends computer to communicate, thus play games together, they both need a unique address. All you do is go into the properties of your network card, and set an IP address, something like 192.168.1.1 for your computer and 192.168.1.2 for your friends.
thanks for that, so I buy a crossover cable, put one end of it in my networking card and the other end in his, then change the ip. -then will the games automatically detect the other pc or do you have to set anything else up?
thanks for your patence but I really know nothing about networking
btw, whats a networking card? is it like a gigabit ethernet connection?
networking card and gigabit ethernet are the same thing
you have a network card which enables you to connect your pc to other peoples. This is formally known as an ethernet card, but most people call it a network card as a nickname cos its a bit easier to swallow
the gigabit refers to its speed. Most network cards are either 100 megabit, or 1000 megabits also known as a gigabit. Its standard si units in the same way 1000 m is 1km.
as for how you do it. You connect your crossover cable to both PCs. you go into the internet settings box on both PCs and set different addresses for each (formally known as IP address). Each PC should then be able to see each other
when your game does a search for local network games, it should find the game running on your friends PC
