Setting up a mail server?

Hi guys,

I've done a search and had a read, but I'm hoping someone can help me out more specifically. I have a spare base unit which I want to turn into a mailserver / file server. I just had a play with some programs in windows, but I've since realised linux is more stable and can do more.

I've played with linux a little bit, but to be honest, I know very little.

My requirements are simple really. For the mailserver, I want it to be able to collect emails sent to my domain (agdk.co.uk) and for me then to access them with a client, say thunderbird but also have a webmail facility so I can access them when away from home.

The fileserver can just be a simple smb share I guess. Will be used for streaming my music / videos to my xbox which can recognise smb shares.

I really am a newbie when it comes to this though, so the simplest and most secure (don't want an open relay) way would be best for me! Ta guys,

I use qmailtoaster, it's a piece of cake to set up and takes less than an hour

cheers riddler. I'll give installing open suse ago and then banging that on. I've tried clark connect and it's annoying me silly.

Ok - decided to give clarkconnect another go and to perservere.

In fact, I've cracked it! YAY! I had to download another module to sort it. Job done. Now I can also use the webmail facility to access mail at work. Hopefully.

I was going to say. if you can't get clarkconnect working your pretty much stuffed for normal linux.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I'm not that inexperienced. It's just been a long time since I dabbled. I've played with redhat/suse and some others before but I think it was the heat, my desire for some food and general tiredness.

Annoyingly, I'm unable to access my server from work, they've blocked access to the port I forwarded. Doh!
