Hi lads,

Setting up a system for a client, to back up his work computer from home. He is giving me a system which i updating the HDD in to bigger faster running ones.

Whats the best way to set it up for remote backup ?

Will i need to use specific software ?

Can i use ip addresses and map the work drive and allow it to backup ?

Best OS , xp, seven or server ?

im putting 2 x 500GB in the machine

Any advice would be great, as i have done abit of setting up servers and stuff, but want it done right, as it will lead to more work. Im 18 by the way, company for 2 years running :D getting bigger and better slowly but surely.

thanks in advance.

i have a fair idea, of either using the ip address of the work machine and using the in built software on the machine

or possibly using a piece of software like acronis or something to do scheduled back-ups.

I know what you mean 'fox' but im just running past you guys for abit of advice or a simpler and more easier way of doing it. But by the sounds of you thats to much to ask ? "/

This will get me more work so i want to do it right to start off with.

Office is in Belfast so id say it would be fibre optic conenction.

The machine is from his workplace so would be decent spec.

Is it not a simple case of accessing the router and giving the machine a static IP ?

He has asked for a machine at home to do it, but will recommended a NAS type system or a automatic Back-up hard drive.

Many thanks for advice :)

Thanks !

Em its a large bathroom retailer and showroom. I'm near sure its a fiber connection.
right now Im getting lost abit, how would that be setup ? Ive done abit of work in networks but bit blank in some cases.

2 x 500gb = £60 with VAT claimed back a few quid less.
where as ..
Nas = £120+

I think the main thing to is he is looking to access some stuff from home, i could connect the NAS to the network in the showrooms office and use the external IP thing from to be able to access it from home. Correct ? That is if he goes down the NAS route.

NAT is opening/forwarding the port for the public to see or yourself ?

Thanks looked at the software, just may use it. i use teracopy myself

i want something simple and usable for him too.

Thanks everyone for the post so far.

No only have you made a few things more clearer for me but also give me your advice on whats the best route to take.

Many thanks :)

He will prob look at which is the most cost effective for him. Its more the point he does not want a backup solution in the acc office, as he said if there was ever a fire everything would be lost. But im near sure you could still retrieve data from hard drives easy enough.
