Hi Guys,

I know some of you use Cisco 79XX series IP Phones for VoIP, so I thought this would be the best place to ask. I'm very new to Cisco IP Phones and with my very minimal network know-how they seem extremely complicated so I could do with some help. My plan is to setup this phone so that I can use it with a VoIP provider such as sipgate.

My network setup at the moment is very simple, Telewest 10meg Cable Broadband through a standard Surfboard Motorola SB4100 which goes in to my standard wired Netgear RP614 v3 4 Port Router. This router shares the internet connection with 4 computers placed around the house.

At first I setup my Cisco 7940G connection wise as I thought it should be setup. There are 3 connector sockets on the back 2 RJ45s and another smaller one labelled AUX, possibly RJ11, does anyone know what this one is for? Anyways, the two RJ45 sockets are labelled 10/100 SW and 10/100 PC. I connected the cable from the router into the 10/100 SW and then a cable from the 10/100 PC port to the PC who's space on the router the phone has taken. Unfortunately this didn't seem to work, with the PC getting a completely different IP address, losing internet access and the phone saying "Ethernet disconnected". I also noticed that the port the phone was connected to wasn't lit, so I tried a few different cables which didn't fix the problem and a factory reset, again no change.

I decided to disconnect the PC from the phone, but that didn't work either. So I finally tried using the other port for connection with the router, the one labelled "10/100 PC". Strangely this improved things somewhat with the port on the router lighting up and the phone moving on from "Ethernet disconnected" to "Configuring VLAN" and then to "Configuring IP" which is where it now stops and doesn't get past. I checked the router settings page and it has detected the Phone and assigned an IP to it, this never happened before. Also if I go into Settings > Network Configuration after a while most of the key information is automatically filled in, things like DHCP Server, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Router 1, DNS Server 1, 2 and 3. However it doesn't get past the "Configuring IP" message so is something wrong? Any suggestions on things to try would be great? Is the setup done correctly connection wise?

As for Firmware which I hear a lot about with these phones, the following is what I see in the "Firmware Versions" page:

App Load ID: P00307010200
Boot Load ID: PC0303010100
Version: 7.1 (2.0)

I have however no idea how to update it and I’m assuming in order to do so I will have to resolve the first problem beforehand anyways.

Any help would be a great help.

Thanks,

Kind Regards,

A slight update, I have been able to type in the IP address asigned to the phone which brings up an information page displaying settings, status and so on. So it does appear the phone is able to connect to the router. I have also noticed that there is a setting that says "PC Port Disabled - YES" so I don't really know what is going on there. From what I've tried and read you can't change that setting without Call Manager.
