modem/tv is in the living room downstairs

Pc1: upstairs bedroom
pc2: study/office downstairs

okay basically what i wanted to ask if, i initiate a download from one of my pc's and select the nas drive as a download location, since that nas drive is connected via ethernet to the hub will it download through the modem/hub onto the nas or will it go through my pc than through to my nas? (which is what i don't want)

ofc i want all the media on the nas so it's accessible to all devices.

am i making sense

You can't really download directly to the NAS, it has to go via a PC really... you don't start the download and then it re-directs it to the NAS, the PC downloads it and then copies it to the NAS across the network. Have you got the NAS already? If not, you could perhaps look at building a very cheap PC running Linux and set that up as a NAS. Then you could get the download link on your PC, SSH/VNC into the Linux/NAS and download directly from that. It also lets you add more storage to the NAS, or set it up as a server.

The way to look at it is that the PC is on already, and your network is faster than your internet. I'd maybe look at connecting the PC via Gigabit LAN rather than WiFi, but even so you're not going to run into performance problems. The only issue is if you want to turn the PC off before the download starts, in which case I refer you back to the previous paragraph, because you need something cleverer than basic NAS.

Ready built NAS solutions like Synology and QNAP come with download managers built in. I assume here you mean fileshare sort of stuff (downloads) ?

You can configure these to download independent of your PC.

Basically along these lines

You place a link in a file watched by the download manager from your PC

The DL manager picks up the link

starts the download

places finished download in file folder you specify (on NAS in your case)

None of this requires your PC1 or PC2 to be on and no files pass through either device

you can schedule this to occur at off peak useage times

Welshdragon is a syn guru and does reviews on these units... hopefully he'll pick this thread up and confirm how easy this is to do with the latest DSM 4

My own Syn model uses a much older OS (DSM) but works along the same lines

:)
