setting up private vpn

can anyone recommend soemthing? i dont like hamachi as you need the pro version to get it working properly (peer to peer).

has anyone used soemthing like openvpn? or somethign else?

No, you don't. You may have low bandwidth relays taking over if you are having NAT issues. If you mean the mediation server then even the pro version uses that and so everyone suffers when the go offline (happening more and more often recently)

OpenVPN is a good solution, the HOWTOs on their site are quite good and in all it now only takes me around 5 minutes to set up another tunnel (point to point)

But if you want basic, just the logmein remote desktop thingie
