Hey,

I'd like to enable QoS on my 3Com 3CRWDR100A-72... from what I gather this would mean I could run something like Bittorrent, but it would dampen the effect on my ping times in games and improve performance in Skype etc.

The QoS options are not very advanced... basically there are 3 options; CBR, UBR and VBR. It is currently set on UBR. Which of the other options do I need to select, and is there anything else I need to tweak so that time critical packets get priority?

Cheers,

Suman

Ok ok :( thanks anyway. Just for future reference, what is the QoS mode called that would let me do this?

QoS stands for Quality of Service. The three modes you stated relate to bitrate and don't really have any use.

The kind of thing you are seeking is otherwise known as 'traffic shaping'. Software that prioritises packets at the users request. It's not easy to configure and to buy a mainstream solution will cost you a fair bit and from the little I know about it you can only control the upload, which will be of little use to you. You really need both systems working at your ISP and your end.

A simpler alternative is to install second a DSL line and buy a router capable of load balancing.
