Setting up router (WRT54GL), need help asap!

Hi, just got my router, i've banged the CD in and i'm currently going through all the stages. But its come to a section which asks for my ISP IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS 1 and DNS 2, and a connection drop down box with 6 choices (DHCP, PPPOE, Static IP, PPTP, L2TP, TELSTRA).

I've looked on the NTL (my isp) site (stupid virgin!) and google but i cant find anything to help. Basically i havn't got a clue what to stick in any of the boxes so can anyone help me out? Much appreciated.
 
hmm havn't entered any of those settings, just selected dhcp and it seems to have set itself up :s

Coming up on my laptop as an unsecured wireless network though, how can i make it secure?
 
Also, about this DD_WRT firmware, whats the exact file I need to download? It lists loads on the site and its confusing me.

At the moment the singal strength is excellent (54mbps) sitting next to the router, but when i go into my bedroom it goes down to Low and 5.5mbps, will the dd-wrt firmware improve this? (Read somewhere about it increasing the signal strength).

Sorry to be a pain but i'm a complete rookie to this and i need help :p
