Hi all

Need some help with my new company website/email set up as im not great at this stuff.

I understand that to set up a website i first need to buy the space on the internet, the address i want. So i need to buy the mycompany.co.uk domain.

I understand how to do that. You can but domains through several companies online (im just typing in 'buy domain name' and its coming up with a few).

But what about email? How do i go about buying the @mycompany.co.uk email domain/server/space so that i can in future setup [email protected] and [email protected] and every other email address i need?

Thanks

You need a domain and hosting. Once you have both you can setup the email address of your choice through your hosting provider.

So when i buy the domain mycompany.co.uk i'l own the @mycompany.co.uk email addresses?

When i go to but the domain mycompany.co.uk it asks if i want to but any extras. One of which is ADD EMAIL FOR 0.99p a month. Make email more personal - get an address which ends in your own domain name.

So does this mean i need to set up all the ones i want now or can i just ignore this and set them up any time? Why do i have to pay 0.99p a month? For hosting? Isnt the space already mine if i purchase the domain?

Your better off buying a hosting package that includes webspace, domain and email all in one.

Who are you buying all this from?

I'd use Tsohost - there are no hidden extras and their support is excellent.

Im looking at 123-reg but i dont mind where i buy from.

I dont need the email addresses for a few months yet. Maybe not until the end of the year.

I just want to but the domain name and ensure that no one else can have/use mycompany.co.uk or any email address [email protected].

What do you recommend?

In that case buy the domain name only, that is all you need at this time if your not planning on using the domain for anything. However, if you will be setting up a website then you need a hosting package as well.

If you just want to buy the domain have a look at Register1 and Tsohost or Tsohost for domain and hosting package.

So if i but the domain name now i can always buy a host package and setup email addresses later right?

And once i have brought the domain name no one can use any email address ending in @mycompany.com regardless of if i have set it up for myself yet or not right?

Thanks for all the help guys!

As above, buy the whole lot in one go at either Tsohost or (I use and is well recommended) Vidahost. Otherwise you would have to mess about with settings you know nothing about (yet!).

http://www.vidahost.com/uk-shared-hosting

You then get the option of buying your domain with the package.

Once you have bought the domain, the mycompany.co.uk is yours. For however long you want it. You will have to keep renewing it every x years though. Everything to do with that is yours.

Correct. :)

Thanks for the help man!

And i should but the mycompany.com as well as the co.uk one right? I can set it up so that if anyone goes to .com it sends you to the .co.uk site. I dont want someone to buy .com version of my site and confuse customers!
