I'm currently discussing the answer to this question with a mate, and we are at logger heads over it.

Divide 200 by half and add 30? What do you get?

My mate is saying 32.

He is saying because its ambiguous, he is reading it as half of 200, so he is doing

(200 / 100) + 30 = 32

Dividing by half is a thing, it’s not all that ambiguous.

Depends how you're wording it. Do you mean divide 200 by half as in the number 0.5. (But that's a strange way to phrase it)

Or more likely did you mean divide 200 by half. (As in divide 200 by half of itself)

Or divide 200 into half. i.e 100.

Its a trick question
The term divide by half is really supposed to be divide in half, its poor english thats used by people who do mean divide in half.

However in maths, divide by half means divide by 0.5

No one says divide by half when they mean multiply by 2, but the maths is the same.

Using your mates logic he's still wrong, using the "and" to mean as well as, you'd need to add the 30 to the half number before dividing, so you'd get 200/(100+30) which equals 1.538461538461538, otherwise the challenge would say "and then add".

Pretty simple. Divide by half means divide in half, not divide by 0.5 etc.

If the question read divide by half of one then I would agree 430, but the question reads as if the the answer should be 130.

It's all in the wording and interpretation.
