not impressed.

Go in there, tell them im speaking for my busy parents.

me: "They have £500, they need an amp, cd player, and bookshelf speakers"

him: "well you wont get much for that"

me: "they want warm, punchy bass, as the bose wave sounds crap"

him: "oh"

me: "they seen the offer richer sounds has got on, you got anything better?"

him: "richer sounds, ppppfffffft, they are crap, seriously you might aswell throw the money down a drain"

me: "oh" *rolls eyes*

him: "however, if they are prepared to spend £800, they will get an ok Denon budget amp, budget cd player, and some Monitor Sound speakers"

me: "they want to spend £500, not £800, as I said when i came in"

him : "well to put it bluntly, you wont get anything decent for that"

so i told him to be away with himself and walked out. Moron.

When company salesmen **** off other companies it puts me right off. Ok so theres competition, but no need to be rude about it.

Im not being picky lol, if you come to me if i run a shop and say you have £50 to spend on a keyboard, whats the point in me offering you a £120 one ?

I have found similar attitudes in hifi shops before, the worst being Superfi in wolverhampton. I bought an amp off them but I practically had to take the £400 out of my pocket and start counting it in front of them to get any kind of customer service. Suppose at 17 they thought I was just a dreamer with no money :(. Suffice to say I never shopped there after that (the amp was the only shop in Wolverhampton that I could get it from at the time, otherwise they wouldn't have got my money then), but surprise surprise, that store was one of the ones that closed - with the crap service I'm not surprised it wasn't profitable though.

I have found Sevenoaks to vary quite a lot - the Wolverhampton store is great, friendly staff who'll show you their latest items or have a chat about new products and the industry in general, even if you're only in to buy an optical cable or the like. Have been chucked the remote and given a cup of tea a couple of times and just told 'have a listen and see what you think' for systems I can't even afford (Quad II 40s and ESL989s, and the Arcam Solo, and a couple of megabucks AV systems). On the other hand I've found other branches to be similarly snooty about budget components.

I can recommend a store called Music Matters they have a number of stores in and around Birmingham.

I told them I was just looking when I went in there with a mate and was treated very well and given demo's of anything I wanted to listen to without any fuss so I ended up spending £3000 before I left the store :D

That's the problem with buying from shops you get some really annoying staff, but other times really helpful staff. That's why I like buying from the internet, no hassle. Also, richer sounds are very good, bought from them a few times.

You can get better prices on the net but you still really need to go and listen to it before you buy it, if everyone bought everything off the net these shops would close down and you would have nowhere to try before you buy.

This was in plymouth, i did have a rucksack maybe i appeared to be a broke chav ? i was wearing shirt, patterned top, jeans, brown shoes, not your average chavvy stuff :S

Richer sounds is miles away to walk to so sadly couldnt hear it today.

i dont know of any other hifi shops in either plymouth or truro ????????? anyone ?

wow, i am quite shock what 7oak did to you. No respect at all....

Anyway, 7oak is a place where i use for listen to some overprice speakers stuff and comepare them to the lower price model. I had my home cinemas system bought in S__per-F__ Nott. they are much cheaper than 7oak but the down side is they do not have regularly display 600 above speaker and equipment.

However, they may be able to get them for you in 10 - 20% cheaper price (RRP). My 603 S3 is over 100 quids cheaper than RRP.

you can also try your local Hifi shop...

BTW 500 quids ... you can get NAD CD and NAD amp and 602 S3 with QED Silver Ani. Biwire cables...

Richer sounds had the following deal on not long ago...

Buy the following:
Cambridge Audio AZUR 640A V2 £299.95
Cambridge Audio AZUR 640C V2 £249.95

Get these free:
Mordaunt Short 902i Black £149.95

Might be worth seeing if they will still do it.

Just be aware RS own CA (and several other brands) so they will try to push them over other brands, ie you go in to demo Arcam but they don't have any in stock, instead they plonk a CA amp down and say something like "this sounds identical to the Arcam and is half the price" or other sales talk.

Never had a problem with Sevenoaks here in Exeter.
they have always been very pleasant with me, making me a coffee when I go in.
They have always given me a fairly good discounton all the products I buy, even to the point of beating online retailers. We have actually sat in the shop surfing the net for best prices and he would happily match them.

Doug Brady in Warrington is a Hi-Fi snob, not too interested unless you're wearing a suit or up market clothes.

Depends which guy you speak to there really, I know what you mean though. They have turned there noses up at some of my Hi-Fi chioces before. They seem to want to force there musical preferences on customers rather then let the customer listen and decide whats best for them. Shame as one of the guys there (strange looking dude with a pony tail) was really helpfull when my Cyrus Amp kept blowing up ages ago.

Thats why when I recently bought my new speakers I went to Doug Bradys Hi-Fi in warrington, really great little place, most of there stuff is way out of my price range (20k for a amp  ) but I told them how much I had to spend, they brought out all the speakers in that price range, left me be in a room with all my cds and they only came in to swap over the speakers. No hassle, no pressure to buy and they did me a great deal on the GS10s also. Highly recomended ;)

Just looking on the sevenoaks website and you can definitely put a system together from their stock for £500 with amp, cd + bookshelf speakers, which makes the sales assistants attitude even harder to understand. It's not like they don't sell budget equipment.
