Is this even possible?

If anyone has made something similar, please could they link me to the case?

Cheers, WSS

The SG05 takes mini ITX and mini DTX MBs. So far as I know, at the moment there are no i7 MBs in either format. The MSI X58M is micro ATX and will not fit in the SG05. However, a Zotac 9300 ITX MB with a quad-core Intel Q9550S, 8GB RAM and an overclocked GTS250 (55nm GPU chip, better cooling and power efficiency than the 8800GTS) would offer more than enough power for almost anything.

Um there isn't such thing as a 9" 8800GTX... its 10.5" It won't fit in a mini-itx case, well any I've found. Certainly not the SG05/06

Yeah, i'd been reading around and found that was the case. So i'd be looking at the SG01-F and the SG02-F. What exactly is the main difference between them? I can't see much after a quick check on the web site.

Cheers for all the help :)

Thanks, I stand corrected. Got somehow the 8800GTX mixed up with the 8800GTS in my mind. The 9" one is the 8800GTS, while the 8800GTX is way longer, 10.5-10.6".

Okay, an update on this. I don't know whether or not to continue with the i7 as its proving to be pretty expensive all together! :P

At the moment i'll be getting:

i7 920
MSI X58M
Sugo SG01B-F
Patriot 6GB 1600MHz stuff
Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD

This comes out to about £550 inc VAT.

Stuff i'll be adding:

8800GTX
Sound card?
DVD writer
Monitor
Keyboard
PSU?

^^ I'm wondering if i'll get away with using the 550Watt PSU i'm using currently in my shop bought MESH pc, but then again, don't think it's worth risking £500's worth of kit just to use an old power supply, so maybe this instead? OCZ ModXtreme 780Watt PSU

All in all, can you guys see any problem with all that fitting together (It'll be my first built, newbie me xD) or anywhere where I can save some money? This should hopefully get me through 3 years of uni.

My personal oppinion on OCZ psu's isn't good. I found them noisy little ********, but it is a good price. Corsair are always wonderfully reliable, but come at a price.
From my understanding I wouldn't get 1600Mhz Patriots, as it isn't worth it over 12800Mhz esp when you are putting it all in a m-atx case, (Saves you a fair bit of money as well)

Other thing is the 8800GTX will be bottlenecking an otherwise top of range rig. Don't get me wrong they are wonderful cards, I've still got mine, but your building a rig to knock the pants off most applications / games for some years, and a HD4850 is faster than a 8800GTX in most things now unfortunately : (

Ah cool, I'll downgrade the RAM then, the OCZ modules look pretty cool :D

And yep, I thought the 8800GTX would be getting a bit cranky now, but I'd rather not shell out £150+ for another good card at the moment. At least I know the rest of the rig will be running for a few years so I can upgrade the graphics later.

But apart from that, will everything fit in? If I buy the CPU individually, do I get the CPU cooler with it, or is there a after market cooler that will fit in the Sugo?

It depends if the CPU is OEM or retail. Retail provides fan and any necessary extras, OEM doesn't.

Here is a quick pricing I've thrown together, I've put the components you've listed in including the SG01, though personally I prefer the lian li V351 which would do you the job as well. I haven't listed any 3rd party CPU cooler as its up to you if you want it or not. Also, if you are planning on overclocking and making your computer as fast a possible, maybe get a smaller HDD with single platter for OS and larger for data? (just an idea for you)
Also unless you are particular about your sound, the onboard sound provided by the Mobo should be adequite

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail £201.99

Also, just throwing it out there. I know the 8800GTX will run most things, but if you are planning on upgrading it. Something like this would be good. It is smaller, should run cooler, don't know about noise, and use less power than the 8800GTX on stock. If not maybe try pick up a HR-03+ for the GTX... I've got one... which keeps it nice and cool and blooming quiet.

O I just thought, if you are interested in using an AM3 chip instead, you can get a system for much cheaper.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £145.98
(£126.94)
Asus M4A785TD-M Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £77.99
(£67.82)
OCZ Platinum AMD Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel (OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK) £60.00
(£52.17)
With the Case, PSU and hard drive you selected added to the price, inc tax and del. I get £486.86

Good luck, less us know what you do.

Actually, that looks like a better idea. Are there any mATX AM3 motherboards available at the moment? I don't think the one you linked is mATX.

Also, is there a big difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM?

DDR3 has faster transfer speeds, but much higher latency... Swings and roundabouts :D For what you looking at, if you can find some low latency DDR3 for not much more than DDR2, its probably worth it, if not stick to DDR2... only problem is DDR3 is now becoming well established and in a few years time DDR2 is going to be hard to get your hands on, but you are a few years off that yet.

Alright then, looks almost complete.

What wattage PSU should I be looking at getting? And what is the difference between modular and non-modular?

edit: sorry, i should specify. This is for the AMD Phenom X4 955 processor, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz, Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H mobo, and an 8800GTX

Thanks for all the help by the way :)

Modular - means most of the cables can be removed. This saves space and allows better airflow and cable management.
Non-modular - obviously the opposite and all cables are fixed.

Probably around 600W, but a good 520W like the Corsair HX520 should do. It all depends on the manufactorer and a lot on the power on the 12V+ rails .

This one seems a good buy this week, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the quietest.

But if you're prepared to pay a little more this one is much more quiet and very adequit for what you want

There are better ones on the market, but at a much bigger cost and the PC P&C should be perfect for you.

Depends if you want a lot of room for upgrade or quietness.

Right, got most of the components sorted now, the only thing i'm concerned about is the cooling - will the stock cooler actually fit in the case with my PSU? And do PSU's actually vary in size by a large amount?

Stock cooler will fit. Though you could consider 3rd party cooler that doesn't pull air downward over the heatsink (or rotate the heatsink fan on the stock - this is if the PSU has a fan that will sit over the PSU and pulling air through it, most now do) This will help take the hot air away from the CPU and help the PSU with a nice supply of air.

As for PSU, most ATX are the same, though just keep an eye out for extra long ones (they are normally very high powered ones and ones you won't need) I think ATX2.2 is the standard form factor size. (if not its the power specs, someone will correct me) Either way, as long as you're not looking at getting 700+W, you don't really have to worry. Worry about your 12V rails more :D
