I wish to replace our business machines here with something small, low power (consumption) and quiet.

It only has to do office tasks, internet, email, basic image viewing (not manipulation) and running our internal software which will run on anything!!!

Any suggestions?

Probably a some sort of shuttle system. I don't think an Atom system will be upto the task really. I get fed up when things don't run quickly at work - especially on the old comps.

Im not the one to ask about Shuttle Systems however :D

Well as you have a net-top you will be in the best position to judge for yourself if it is quick enough. Otherwise you could try a geforce 9300 based mini itx with a celeron

Quite a few Dell Optiplex 160's popping up at my Uni, the speed is quite acceptable and they're very compact. I think the pricing is a bit high but Dell do great deals if you're ordering more than a couple of machines.

Well ive got the system installed (using it now) and after a handfull of teething problems it appears to be working well.

The display still looks odd, with standard windows screens, such a properties box, looking odd with ghosting and hard to read text.

Benchmarks showed the performance of the ION330 dual core atom to be higher than all systems in the building except our server, its also silent and only drawing about 1/5 of the power :)
