Hi guys,

I want to put together a small SFF pc for gaming for a friend.

This isn't really going to be anything spectacular, just need to be able to run some games.

I was looking into the Asus M3A79-CM motherboard and a AMD X3 8650 since I can get both of those for literally nothing.

What case would you guys reccomend and if so what graphics cards would fit?

I would prefer an AMD card if possible.

Now please bare in mind this is for gaming on a 17" monitor and the person will be getting this to replace a Socket A Sempron 1.3Ghz and a Radeon 9800 Pro.

The graphics card is going to depend on the case. Something like a Sugo SG01, SG03, or Lian-Li V350 would fit just about any card you can find without issue.

If you're looking for something good but not top spec, maybe consider an HD4850, possibly even second hand. They're a gigantic upgrade from a 9800, probably in the order of 5-7x, and perform well in the latest games.

Beyond that, a couple of gigs of DDR2, a nice PSU (any of the cases above take a full size ATX one) and you're good to go.

Basically all SFF case can have big Graphics Cards like the GTX295.

Um - No that is not true. You do have to be careful, yes many can, but some of the older can't; The lian li v300 requires cutting to fit a large gfx card in and so do some of the silverstones. Think the SG01-Evo and SG02 does, but not the F versions. Correct me on that if i'm wrong. I think i might be.

Either way, that statement before is wrong.

Might be pushing a Scythe ninja mini.

the V350 and SG02 (if you find the right one) are both very good cases, good air floor and look good aswell. If you've got yourself a Thermaltake VF6000BWS, im sure that is pretty good as well. though you don't see many around here.

you best bet for coolers, would be a scythe zipang, zalman, cnps8000 or silverstone have a nice one, but can't for the life of me remembers its name. have a look on their site.

I heard that the V350 has some heat issues due to there not being an exhaust fan, specially when using a cooler like the Ninja Mini or Zipang

Just had an Idea, I have a spare Phenom II 940BE HSF. I take it that thing is miles better than the stock AM2 4200's HSF.

Wouldn't that be sufficient for it and fit really any case?

dunno why, it has a fan for exhaust next to hard drives, your PSU pulls the air off the CPU heatsink and exhausts it out the back, you've got positive air flow as you have the 2 80mm in the front. They've made a grill area at the back for the air to escape. Seems fine to me... I've played with the V300, but not the V350

Should be a nice case!

To answer your earlier question - i have had a VF1000BWS (similar to the one you mentioned) and managed to fit a Silverstone NT06 onto it. With a suitable PSU (with the fan on the bottom) you can use the fan to cool the CPU too.

As for GPU i only used a 3450 (HTPC) but i'd imagine it would easily accomodate something like a 4850.

Thanks GT.

Although I think I'm inclined towards the Scythe Shuriken :)

As for the GPU, I might be getting a 4670 in it, or maybe a better GPU if I can get a good second hand one here in Ireland :)

A true Pitty there's no place that sells Mountian Mod chases here, I like the look of the Plateau 18

Yeah! I love that little thing. Pitty it's so expensive, and with import tax it really isn't worth it at all.

Even if I was to build myself a SFF. ( Although then I'd probably go overboard :p )

AH so true! When do I ever go overboard with a system :p

The problem with building my friend this system is that now I want to sell my Project0001 build and build me a watercooled SFF LAN gaming rig :(

Not good...

I know - i'm just the same! :(

After quickly moving from a large modded server case to a P180, then Lian Li PC-101 and most recently a Lian Li A70 i'm pretty astonished i've still got the MM.

Probably owned it the longest out of any of my cases!

Resist N19h7m4r3... the Silverstone is beautiful! Although not that compact! :D

I'm trying desperately not to put some adds up for my new Beauty. I've barely had her :(

It's the watercooling gods, they call to me! I must appease them :p

MY biggest concern is keeping this Budget SFF build just that, a budget one. I've already spent too much time looking at fancy 4870's and looking for an Phenom II compatible mATX mobo.
