SG01 case - and its cooling system

Hi all,

Considering a SFF solution at the moment, a constraint for me is that the device will be placed inside fitted furniture in our dining room - the width of the enclosure is 264-265mm. Height and depth won't be a problem.

I've been looking at the Silverstone cases, however the smallest case SG01 has a width of 263mm, which leaves at best 1mm clearance either side.

There appears to be a side vent on the case... should I be ditching this as an option and going for a shuttle instead?

Thoughts appreciated

As long as theres clearance at the top of the case u should be fine, the sugo exhuast's air from 2 fans at the top left & the rear if u have a dual slot graphics card.

Thanks for that, I was rather hoping for that response! :D

I'll have a dig around now for a good spec to go with (something around the Q6600, 4GB ram, and a decent graphics card).

Yeah, if air can get in the sides you're fine, I wouldn't suggest covering the vents, but the small gap you've left should be alright.

would seriously not get the sg01 if all the clearance is is 2mm. I have a sugo and all of the air flow into the case comes in from the sides. I put my pc in a hole in my desk (about 5cm on either side and blocked rear to unit) and it raised the temps by around 5 degrees.

May be worth looking into the sg03 which is a more upright design while maintaining roughly the same overall volume as the sg01, plus the vents work front to back :)

Thanks for that - all helpful. Whilst I've indicated that height isn't an issue, I'd *prefer* a shorter case, am hoping to fit a NAS device and a router on the shelving above!

Given the mixed comments about airflow, I think that maybe the shuttle route for me is a better/safer option... the SP35P2 is looking like a good choice, welcome any comments either way; my constraints being space as discussed, and my requirements being for heavy family use including modern gaming. Not sure which graphics cards will fit in that shuttle, current working assumption is X1950XTX 512mb unless I can establish why not...

So how much space do you have the SG03 is only 360 mm high (x200 mm (W) x 312 mm (D)), the SG01e being 216 mm high (x263 mm (W) x 393 mm (D)).

aha, all good questions, you're making me *think* damn it ;) Seriously this is making me work it all out, and am having to consider not just this requirement but also the next one ;) which is a headless server / NAS device and I will need somewhere for that to go.

I'll post up some piccies when I get a chance so it makes more sense to you, in the meantime however:

If I remove shelf where router is currently sitting, I have 550mm height x 265mm width. However, am hoping to use that space to have (a) the SFF box (b) a router, probably a wireless-N type and hopefully (c) either a NAS device e.g. possibly Thecus N5200 Pro or a headless server (if server, ideally would look same as gaming PC).

Running the numbers for the first time, looks like router would be at least 70mm especially with antennae (e.g. D-Link DIR-635). NAS device 230mm height/shuttle is 210mm. Shelf itself takes up nearly 30mm.

Best case is 210 (PC) +30 (shelf) + 210 (server) + 70 (router)=520 which is pretty tight, but just about works. Not much margin for error there...

Certainly it means that if I intend to have 2 devices + a router in that enclosure, then the sg03 wouldn't be an option.

Maybe I should ditch the idea of fitting so much tech into such a small space - the other option would be to have the NAS device (or server) to sit on top of the subwoofer that is tucked away under the desk in the corner. Not sure how happy it would be sat on top of a powerful speaker... doesn't sound like a good idea, magnetic fields, sensitive electronics and all that...

Could I fit an sg01 on it's side? lol, I wondered that too, but it might be fun and games when it came to loading DVDs.

As I said, I'll post up a picture or two tomorrow if possible, this is a very friendly forum, your help and guidance is greatly appreciated!

cheers

SG01e on its side is not a good idea, as I said earlier all the air flow comes in from the vents on the side so only having a 'top vent' is not a good idea.

I suppose if you're prepared to mod a sugo sg01e you could put some vents in the base as its on feet and use just 1 optical drive and use the other with a vented drive bay cover (ie like on some lian li).

As to an overall suggestion - not sure how wide you cupboard hole is so take it as you will :)
Silverstone temjin tj08 is 195 mm (W) x 381 mm (H) x 378 mm (D), now if your internal space is 400mm you could fit 2 side by side and still maintain air flow through the cases. It would leave 139mm spare for ventilation and router with the shelf in.

Alteratively and this is a mad suggestion, you could always mod a case to take a nano/m itx motherboard (iirc theres actually one that fits into a 5.25" bay and theres definately a psu that does as its for the mozart tx) and then use one larger size case to fit all the hard drives/optical etc in :)

EDIT: ignore my first idea, too small a space

If you give some full dimensions of this cupboard then Im sure more ideas should come through.

Enclosure width is 265mm. Height is 550mm but as discussed ideally I want to fit 2 devices plus a router in there. Shelf is 30mm which needs to be allowed for. Depth is 540mm.

Summary: HxWxD = 550x265x540, however need 2 SFF devices and a router.

All mad suggestions appreciated :D Shuttle dimensions seem to work okay I guess, I'm still fairly ignorant as to the advantages of these other cases over the likes of a shuttle - is there a major downer if I opt for a shuttle solution? Seems like the simplest approach given the information currently available.

As to shuttle - no issue except maybe graphic cards with a dual slot cooler and limited expansion card slots.

You do realise theres 200+mm left behind the cases don't you :)

You could wall mount the router (a simple L shaped bracket would do if the router doesn't have slots in it) or you could stick the nas round there, its unlikely that will be accessed on a regular basis.

That's a cracking idea about the router, thanks for that... I'll definitely do that. :)

As far as the other device goes (be it NAS, or be it headless server), if I go for a NAS device then that's a real possibility. Less so if I go for a server, aside from size I don't want it drawing in the hot air from the gaming pc.

You've saved me some millimetres, yay! :D

what do you want the server to do as a lot of nas devices can do a lot of things now.

Synology (and others) have built in web and ftp servers which with the right router config can be accessed from outside as well as internally.

Yeah, NAS might be the way to go - low power consumption, quiet etc. I started a thread here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17780115 to discuss NAS v Server as I'm interested in other people's experiences.

One of my key requirements is media streaming - and the ability to run slimserver as we have a couple of squeezeboxes around the house. From what I've read, some of the CPU's in NAS devices are a bit slow to provide a great experience when it's serving out the slimserver webpages and streaming audio (e.g. FLAC) round the house as well. Which pushes the requirement up towards the likes of the Thecus N5200 Pro. At which point, in terms of cost, a SFF PC is starting to look attractive :)

I agree that a decent NAS box will probably serve my immediate requirements. However in the future I may invest some time (hobby only, to be fair) building a web-app with a database back-end, then having a db/web server at home could be useful. So I guess a server would be a more flexible solution. Similarly, if I re-do our Lounge, I may wish to provide a facility to stream video... no idea if NAS boxes provide this facility or not.

Did you see the blurb about Microsoft releasing a "home server" operating system? Designed to run on very low spec hardware, some companies are developing fanless solutions. I had a look at the features and it looks good for Joe Public - but maybe a bit limiting for the enthusiast.
