Shadowrun - doomed to failure?

this may be mildly successful as a PC FPS, but as the first attempt at the cross-platform experience, I think it's doomed to failure.

Why?

PC: £25
360: £40

Quite simply, although it looks decent, it's not decent enough to warrant a £40 price tag for a multiplayer-only shooter with a limited (9 iirc) number of maps. The majority of decent 360 FPS have that many maps or more, as well as solid single player campaigns.

I don't believe the 'draw' of cross platform will be enough for this to be much of a success on the 360.

And that's even before we get into the (potential) minefield of free additional maps on the PC vs paid for DLC on the 360. I say potential as I don't know how moddable the PC version will be. As the dev team is disbanded now, it also remains to be seen how much future support will exist on either platform, paid or otherwise.

Sorry, but I think MS have badly miscalculated on this one.

I think this game will not fail on its design, implementation or capacity as a game. I think it will fail on brand awareness and marketing.

I'm still getting it though.

I have always said i think Live on PC wont work, i can't see PC owners wanting to pay for someting they get for free already. The probably get a better service for free too.

I also agree that shadowrun being Vista only is going to kill it. a lot of people wont play on Vista because it isn't great yet, especially with drivers for graphics and sound cards. But MS are trying to use this and Halo 2 to pimp Live for windows and Vista, and i think they may get a wee surprise.

I wont be buying it on either format, if it was playable on XP i would have bought the PC version, but alas it isn't. So i will just need to sit back and watch the OcUK fad come and go and grin and bare it :)

I think that's spot on. It'll probably sell 500k or so to the dedicated hardcore 360 owners and become the 'game of the month' but really it's just going to be a filler before Halo 3 arrives.

I'm generally a single player gamer who likes the odd bit of multiplayer though so this is probably the reason it doesn't really get me excited. (It's the same with the Halo 3 mp beta. I'm far more interested in the sp experience).

Is it doomed to failure? Depends on your definition of failure imo. It might not be an AA title and will all be forgotten in six (maybe even three) months but it will make ms money and gives people a 'good' game in the middle of a gaming drought (all platforms).

I also agree with this. I'm interested in the game and I know a few others here are, I hope it will tide me over to H3 (after the Beta). I also want to see if I can practice what I have been preaching about KB/M vs controller. (I can see my arse may be handed to me)

I'll use this as a filler until Halo3 arrives, really want a different kind of multiplayer game as opposed to 'realistic' games such as Ghost Recon 2 and Rainbow 6 Vegas.

On the PC they did well yes. On consoles, considerably less so.

I wonder if you'll be able to play PC vs 360 over a LAN?
You won't be able to play online on both at the same time with the same gamertag, same probably goes for LAN games.

Solution: use a different gamertag :)

Yep, but what I mean is will you be able to play PC vs 360 on a LAN without being logged into live? (With different gamertags obviously).

Or is it ONLY possible over Live?

Hmm interesting question. There may be an in game networking option, but I guess with PC's it would have to be ultra secure so as not to be cracked and manipulated to allow PC gamers to play across the internet without paying for live.

A lot if not all XBL 360 games also have a lan feature.

I'd hope they'd allow it.

Makes you think how quickly a trainer will be available, though. Suppose that's the benefit of using Live, get caught cheating and forfeit your Live account.

Also, Krono, 360 or Vista? I can't, for the life of me, remember what it is that you've been preaching about KB/M Vs 360 :p

I'm sorely tempted to pick it up on Vista, if just for the Live integration (the same temptation that's making me think about Halo2).

Are they planning dedicated servers or is this going to suffer the same fate as other Xbox Live! games and be P2P only?

360 purchase for me, my vista machine is sadly lacking in... well, every department.

What's drawing you to buy it Kronologic? Not having a go, genuinely interested to see what the draw factor is for you.

My mistake above btw, I read elsewhere that it's actually only 6 maps. £40 for six maps online multi only seems a bit limited to me, especially with the future of updates for the title in some doubt.

I really like FPS games anyway, this claims to have a new spin on things using magic and what not. I guess its just the premise of the game. I first heard of it a while back when a group from another forum I frequent (real Halo fanatics) went to E3 and came back with glowing reports about this game. I kept my eye on it and it seems like a gamble by the publishers and developers but it will either be a knockout game or a pile of dross.

As a lot of people who play me know I am a fairly competitive gamer, and this also presents a new challenge to me. To see how I compare to KB/M players.

This will not be a good game to judge how competitive your pad skills are compared to a decent KB/M user. The devs have restricted and gimped the KB/M controls on the PC to even up the playing field.
Play testing clearly showed just how superior KB/M is.
