+1

I have had my PS3 for around 2 weeks now and have ordered a 500GB external to go with it for all my films and music. Media playback is awesome!

Dont regret it for 1 bit

what formats of media does the ps3 play that the 360 cant? other than the obvious (blu-ray). my 360 plays xvids fine.

None, They play the same. a lot of people don't like the sound of the 360 while it's turned on though, If you're looking for the angle for why some buy the PS3 over the 360 for media play back.

+ bluray which you know already :p

Plus the xbox acts as a media centre extender if you already have all your photos, music and video on your PC access them from the 360. internal HDD not enough? Just plug an external frive in via USB and stream music/photos and video from it. Not to mention the growing library of HD films & Music videos downloadable from Live, plus Instant messenger integration, got an Ipod or other MP3 player? Just plug it into the 360 USB port and play from there...

But the Ps3 does all that?

Turn on Ps3 for first time ---> search for media servers---> select your PC---> play chosen file.
After that it finds your PC every time it turns on.

You can play your ipod through your Ps3 as well, although that is a little harder.
However, if you Ps3 is already seeing your PC, why would you need to plug in your ipod?

Visitors Ipods? Itunes only content? PS3 doesn't do the full media centre interface either and won't allow the replay of TV programs etc (assuming you use media centre with a tuner), 360 will do either Media Centre extender with the whole MCE UI or just standard media connect interface for music/video/photo files. Buying & downloading films, music video and soon TV series direct from Live is a bonus as well. BBC iPlayer coming to 360 in the next few months (although you may be able to do that already on a PS3, must admit I dunno).

In any case, I just wanted to point out that other than for BluRay (which makes it a done deal if you are a BluRay fan and going to have a large BluRay library) the 360, in my opinion anyway, is the better media machine, has a larger catalogue of games and a superior online offering (Albeit with a charge of ~£25 per year). It's interesting to see the PS3 suggested as the better media machine, i'm not sure I can see why although the bigger internal HDD is I guess a bonus.

The thing that hurt the 360 significantly is the 3 rings of death in the early days (which is fixed now and covered by 3 year warranty) and it can as we all know, be somewhat noisey under load.

I don't want to start a fanboy arguement here but whilst the PS3 is a more sexy looking piece of kit, I really think Sony took their eye off the ball with this generation and relied on people that were die hard Sony fans to keep them in the game. If I was a cynic i'd say that was why they dropped the backwards compat once the die hard fans had paid full wack, now it's priced to try and attract new customers.

Sony lost out again on the killer exclusives this time out. There are a few but no where near as many as in earlier generations.

Whilst PSN is free it's not a great all round offering yet. Unless Sony get their finger out come the next gen they could be the default No 2 or 3 in the market (which actually may not do them any harm, nothing like losing out for a while to give you a kick up the bum and stop being lazy).

Personaly I think Sony were lazy and arogant with the PS3 and the success of the 360 and Wii has come as a bit of a shock to them, prompting price cuts, dropping of dedicated backward compat, new rumble controllers etc. I have a sneaking suspicion that PS4 when it comes will have all the stops pulled out for it in terms of developers and hardware, alongside an online experience to match todays MS Live, and that, can only be a good thing for gamers.

Just my 2c...

I'm looking to get a PS3 'soon', but personally buy one at the moment. With possible new revisions on the horizon i would kick myself if i was hampered with a non bc 40gb and a bc 80gb appears for probably the same money in 6 weeks.

Tbh I very much doubt the 80GB will make it over here, although you could import one?

Constructive post, but imo posted 6 months too late..

Good post if a little incorrect, the PS3 gets Play tv in the summer a twin HD tuner so you can use your PS3 as a PVR, and you can stream this to a PSP or even take it off the PS3 HDD and put it on what ever you like as it has no drm. There is a good thread on here about it. There already is a BBC iplayer for the PS3 although its unofficial it works very well, the Movie/Tv download stuff is also happening this year possibly announced at E3 this year.
