My car has done 93000 miles, and the cambelts never been changed.. its a 306 1.8 petrol.. The recommended time to change it is 80000 but they say it should really be 40000. I am getting it done on saturday, and I have 250 miles of travel this week to work, shall I risk it?

the chance of it snapping is slim in all honesty - along the motorway in top gear you should be revving no more than 3/3.5k which is relatively low

Wait... you have gone 13,000 miles past the recommended change point, yet you have issues with another 250 miles?

........................

noo i bought the car today.. the car seems perfectly fine and drives really well for a 10 year old car. I bought a haynes manual so will do it with my dad on saturday

You have to weigh up the chance of it snapping (whatever that is) with how ****ed off you'll be if it does snap :p

You need a bit more than a Haynes to change a cambelt - you'll need to tension it correctly, and if you get it wrong bad things'll happen ;). It's rated 5 spanners out of 5 on the difficulty scale.. however if you know what you're doing, fair enough.

4 spanners actually :p will there be tension thingy majiggys in a cambelt kit? See I havnt got a clue really what to do, my dad knows more but Id rather save meself £150 and do it myself to be honest.

Is there a reason why you bought a car from somebody who cares so little about it they couldn't even be bothered to service it properly?

Is it an 8v or 16v engine? If its 8v, you only need a few spanners and sockets to do it...if 16v, you need a few more tools...and patience. Easy jobs though.

:/

If you don't know, it's probably not a wise idea to do it yourself. If it's a full kit, it'll include tensioners, you'll want to replace the water pump too probably (don't know how often they fail on these). Means you'll likely want the engine out, unless you like to work in tiny spaces with ring spanners.

4 Spanners in Haynes means you need to know what you're doing, that or it doesn't matter too much if you mess it up.

ROFL, engine out to do a cambelt?

The door is that way -->

Have to had a play in the 306 engine bay? It's not the best places to do a cambelt change, especially when you include the water pump and have no clue about what you're doing...like the OP seems to.

Hows about you read before telling me where to go. ;)

I've done loads of work on the 306 (albeit a 1.9D), including an engine change.

Seriously guys, stop scaring this chap :p One of the first major jobs I did on my pug 306 (1.4 petrol) was a cambelt change. If you're methodic enough and take your time, it's a straight forward enough job. There's just lots of steps involved.

I would be crying if it *does* give up on you though :p
