My brother wants a new computer and me being the nerd of the family i'll make him one. I've got 3 options how to do this:
- make him one from scratch
- sell him my PC and get myself a new one
- sell him parts of my PC , get other parts new, then replace my parts with new stuff

My system is as follows:
E6420 @2.8 with Noctua cooler
ASUS P5N-E
Geil 2GB PC6400
7800GTX
OCZ Modstream 450W
320GB WD
Antec SLK3700 case
LG DVD/RW drive

I was thinking of upgrading but I need to save money for travelling so I can't go overboard, especially as in about 6/7/8 months I wont be using the computer for about a year while I go travelling. But I'm just about to finish uni so will basically be chilling out for half a year or so I want to treat myself a bit.

I was thinking of maybe upgrading to 4GB and an 8800GT, just so I can play crysis and a couple of other new games. I know I wont be able to play it all on max but thats ok.

My brother has a budget of around £300 give or take, and I have about £150 to spend on my parts. What do you think is the best route to take?

I'm a bit out of touch on the hardware side but if I sold him all of my computer for £300 or so (is this a fair price?) and then add my 150 on top I'm thinking I would struggle to get something better than my current setup.

Advice?
Thanks

Well bit of an update. My brother has backed out and doesn't want a computer now :(.

However I still fancy upgrading. My budget is around 150, (200 if it's really worth it) plus whatever I can sell old parts for.

It will be used mainly for gaming so I was thinking another 2GB of ram and an 8800GT perhaps. Only thing I'm worried about is lack of power.

Any advice?

I'm using vista 64bit so I could use the full 4GB. As for the cpu I would like a quad core but as I dont so any video editing and such it kind of seems a bit pointless as games dont really support quads yet (i think). I will probably try get my chip a bit faster when I get some spare time.

As for the PSU I didnt think it was as bad as you say smogsy but I do think that I'm pushing my luck slightly, but its just a lot of money for no performance gain ;)

I did read something about some new cpu's and gpu's coming out later this year. But as I said in my OP I will be going travvelling in 7ish months so wont be using it for a long time then. I want something to kkep me going until then ;)

I agree on the RAM side though, it is really cheap so I will definately be getting that. Only thing I cant decide is whether I'd be pushing my luck getting a new GPU without a new PSU as I cant really afford to get both.
