Shall I upgrade?

Hi all.

With the new AMD GPU's due any day now, is it worth snapping up a bargain?

My current set up:
3570k
Z77-D3H
HD 7850
120GB SSD
1TB HDD
Corsair 8GB
Cooler Master Silent Pro 500w modular
Zalman Z9

I'm looking to play the likes of Project Cars, GTA 5 at high to ultra settings at 1080P

What upgrade path would you wise ones suggest or recommend?

Overclock the cpu if not already done and a new gpu is all that's needed.

Have a look at the 290x or the 970 range.

But do you have a budget in mind for the gpu?

7950 - around 70ish
7970 - around 90ish
their counterparts 280 and 280x are 80-110

just noticed you arent able to use MM
having said that not far off those prices 2nd hand

Budget is around £200 and I'm tempted by the 290x if it's a simple upgrade path?

I think you'd need to change your PSU if you went for a 290x.

Download it, extract onto USB stick, boot into BIOS, select Qflash, update from drive.

Done.

Would others agree that the 290x would be more than pushing it with the 500W PSU?

From the spec sheet it appears to only supply 408W on the 12v rail. I would have serious doubts about your ability to safely run a 290X based system on it, especially if you ever wanted to overclock.

A 970 will be fine with your current psu. The 900 series are extremely power efficient. A 290x will need a new psu.

IMO, wait a few days till the new cards. Nothing to lose out by waiting other than a few days of time waiting. Either the new AMD cards are good, the current cards like the 970 take price drops or nothing interesting happens.
