If you need to ask..

Exactly.

Now wouldn't be a good time for someone who knows nothing about it, anyway. Or any time, for that matter.

EDIT: Read some guides off Google, and I don't mean just a quick skim read. Then try your hand at a stock trading game online.

Very risky going into it at this time with the economy so bad  Stressful I would imagine if you're playing with lots of money.

Better off buying gold with the way the economy is going tbh. I've already made a 26% return on investment in a few weeks.

I'm staying well clear for now, im sure allot of talented people have made some serious money this past year, but a hell of a lot of people have lost Billions.

Depends what you mean....

Longer term buy & hold - tis feasible for an amature investor to pick say 10 stocks and outperform the FTSE 100 over say 5-10 years.

As for short term trading/speculation- tis a lot harder and a lot less forgiving, costs & execution can become a lot more of a factor and these days, with the prevelance of spreadbetting, leverage also becomes something to be aware of - tis not very feasible for an amature to make money - most people who try will lose.
