Right, friend of mine has 2 pc's in the same room. She wants to share her 2nd hard drive with her sister, on her pc.

How do they go about setting it up so her sister can access her 2nd hard drive?

Step by step instructions would be great!! Thanks

Depends how far they want to go with this. Best route would be set up a local network. Quick/easy route which may well more than meet their needs is buy and share an external harddrive.

edit: ah, didn't see that they are in the same room. Someone might have an easy way of doing that

Networking would still be the cheapest and easiest way.

What O/S are they running? Vista and XP should be OK.

There are numerous step by step guides on setting up networks and filesharing if you google it.

Any problems with setting it up just ask.

If they don't mind PC B getting access to this HDD when PC A with this second drive is switched on, a simple network will suffice. You can map the drive to the other PC for easy access in 'my computer'. The other PC will just need to be on to allows access to it.

You can do this with either a switch/router or even with two network cards and a cat 5e cable and nothing else. If they want to share the internet without one PC relaying the net connection to the other (in other words for PC B to get access to the net, PC A must be on) a router is your best bet (is this is a long term idea).

Not sure. They need it for work. Not sure what method they want but probably via a router sounds right. How does one setup sharing of the HD via the router method?

the router will need to have a switch built into it, or you'll have to buy a switch.

For the hardware side-

Take cat 5 cable from PC A and plug into switch or switch/router. Take cat 5 cable from PC B and plug into switch. If you've had to buy a switch connect that to the router if you want internet for the Pc's.

What Operating system are we using?

how are they both connected to the router.? what is the make and model of the router.?

then we can give you advice on setting up a home network which is the easiest wat to access/share files and storage drives.

If both are already connected it should be easy enought(both machines need to be on same network)......use explorer on machine you want to share disc with right click on drive and you will get a share option.just enable it

this also can be used to just select folders instead of complete drives

So, right click the drive and select share. Anything else as i noticed there are other options in there. How do i check they are on same network etc?

Turns out both PC's were connected together via the ethernet ports and the router was connected to one pc via a USB cable. It was a shared folder not HD.

Now, thing is, they are changing ISP so would it be better to connect both PC's directly to the router and then setup sharing again for the folder in question?

Yes. Connect both PC's to the router via Ethernet and then just allow them to both access the shared hard drive by right clicking and allowing sharing, as already mentioned above. BTW the router doesn't have to be connected to any of the computers via USB, as long as it's connected to the phone line for Internet access and as long as the computers are plugged in by Ethernet or connecting wirelessly then that's fine.
