Hi guys,

I'm planning on buying some shares with my savings and I'm looking to buy shares in both UK and US companies. I'm basically looking for a site that has a low flat rate per trade. What share trading sites would people recommend?

Thanks in Advance

Depends Hugely on how you want to invest.

Are you the kind of person who knows when to buy and when to sell? (most people dont)

Try the Halifax sharebuilder.

£1.50 per trade.. (very cheap) But you don’t get to decide the exact time they are purchased. And you can only trade on 4 days a month.

I don’t know your experience in share dealing , but if it is limited may I suggest you try some OEIC’s funds?

All you do is choose the field in which you want to invest and let the professionals do all the buying and selling and since they are buying shares in several companies the risk is often lower.

And finally remember to buy the shares in your shares part of you isa.

There are a few questions that you should ask yourself.

  • How much can you afford to lose.
  • Are you looking for a quick buck, or long-term gain.
  • Have you any clue about equity markets.
  • Are you in this as a career choice, or just a little flutter

Thanks for your replys guys. Basically I can afford to lose it all becuase I don't need the money to get me through uni or anything. Its not a huge amount that I've got (~£600) but I am looking for a long term gain rather than making a quick buck. I'm willing to take a few chances and so I'm not going to go for a managed fund or anything like that.

1. Don't get greedy. eg. A 15% increase in two months is very good profit - in a savings account you would only get <5% over a year.

2. Try to stick to what you know. I tend to trade in the technology sector because it's what I know best.

I'm a member of a share club. Ten of us put £20 a month into a pot and we have regular meetings, plus email & phone messages when necessary, to decide what and when to buy and sell. Our portfolio now is ~£19,000.
