Sharepoint alternatives

Hi all,

I've been at my new job for starting on 4 months now and they've just announced they are looking at introducing Sharepoint to the business. Having asked about sharepoint back in 2012 on here and passing feedback to the project manager I'm waiting to find out what they are thinking about using it for but would also like to be able to suggest alternatives.

So, what alternatives are out there?
 
What is the business wanting to use SharePoint for? It's rather vague to just say "use SharePoint", as it could be a simple Intranet, a team/project site (so you could look at something like Confluence) or something entirely different (as cloud file storage)
