Sharepoint and forms authentication

Due to security concerns, my company is not willing to link Sharepoint to it's own AD, as third-party users will be using the site for collaboration also.

However, Forms authentication, using a custom user database, seems to cripple the functionality of Sharepoint.

Is there any way of setting up or using Sharepoint with a forms-like environment without AD, but has the same functionality as a full Windows-authented setup with AD?

Yeah I suspected that might be the only way - I've asked if they'll do it, but I think they're worried about maintaining two separate ADs.

Ah well back to the drawing board... might go for an outsourced solution.

If they are that worried about it, just "restore" a backup of the existing AD on a scheduled basis, on the machine used for this.
