Hi folks,

Has anyone here installed SharePoint?

I work at a college doing development, and the college is going to implement SharePoint. We want to get ahead of the game and look at developing WebParts and the like, and be able to test them out. Except I'm having issues installing it on our server.

When I install Windows SharePoint Server using standalone server settings, it stops the Default Web Site from running. This is a problem, as we currently have a few ASP.NET sites which people on the network are using.
I've tried adding host headers which doesn't work, and I get the message 'Page cannot be displayed'.

After searching on google I found a few people have this problem and they suggest setting up DNS or WINS, which I have no idea how to set up to work with host headers.

We just want to be able to install it on the server we have and access the webpages through the network without compromising the default web site.

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Thanks

We currently have a Win Server 2003 Tower, connected to the network.
We are administrators of the tower.
We can access the DNS server, but can't edit or make any changes on it.

Looks like it will have to be via a VM Session then.

Thanks

Thanks for all the responses.

I downloaded VMWare Server yesterday, so I'll try it through this.
I just need to try and create a windows server iso to install on the vm.
I don't have the disks, but copied the files to the hdd before sending them back to IT ;).
Trying to create a bootable image in imgburn, but it says the boot img file is the wrong size.
I downloaded the iso of windows server trial, and extracted the boot img.
But it still doesn't work.
