Hi all,

i have just purchased an apple TV and i think its great. Having used it for like 2 weeks now i have been thinking about an idea and wondered if anybody could give me and idea if its possible todo.

at present i download all movies\music on my macbook and from there they are streamed to my apple tv from my itunes library on the macbook. The only bad thing about this is that my macbook needs to be on for the content to stream.

i have a 1TB external hard drive connected to my alienware PC and wondered if i stored all my itunes library on that is their a way i could network the external hard drive so the apple tv could pick it up even tho my pc is switched off?

i have done a little research into this and found that itunes does not need to be running for apple tv to stream. apple tv just needs to know where the media is stored.

sooo...how can i have my apple tv connect to my hard drive through my router? can i somehow have my computer keep the power and connection going to my hard drive even tho the pc is actually switched off?

sorry if this is confusing. i am terrible at explain things haha

Jon

Is the external hard drive plugged in via USB? If yes, then you must have the host PC on for it to be accessible.

If you want your hard drive to be accessible over the network with all PCs switched off you will need to get a NAS enclosure and put the hard drive in there then plug it into your router.

Sadly iTunes does need to be running. As soon as I turn my machine off, home sharing is deactivated and none of your files are visible I'm afraid.
