Hiya

Running Vista Ultimate 64 on this machine, and i've created a folder on one of my HDD's to share on my mini home network. The network is basically 2 PCs, router and a modem.

I can see the XP machine from my Vista machine, and access the shared folders and the printer on that PC, but for some reason now that i've shared the folder on my Vista PC, i can't connect to it from the XP machine without a username and password.

Why is this? I dont have any usernames or passwords set up on my Vista machine so i'm not sure why it's asking for one. How do i stop this?

If you just go to "Network and Sharing Center" and then disable Password Protected Sharing and then share the folder under the group "Everyone" then you should be able to access it no problem. Or do as I do and have both computers using the same username and password.

thanks guys, that sorted most of the problem.

I still couldn't actually use the folder once i'd accessed it due to permissions.
Setting the permission "Everyone" and giving it "Full Control" in Properties>Security tab was still not enough, as it's overwritten by the options in Sharing>Advanced>Permissions.

Seems odd that they even bother having the security tab if it doesn't do anything. Vista is so unnecessarily complicated at times.

Thanks though, finally got it sorted.
