Sharing a Folder on my Server over the internet

VPN server at your home server end and connect via VPN putting you onto the LAN?
Then you can have a drive mapped for it and it'll be like your at home.

This, get a raspberry pi install OpenVPN and off you go, like being at home. Unless your router supports ding this of course.

The issue with FTP is it is clear text. A VPN will allow you to function as if you were next to the server.

Depends if you use plain old ftp or ftp over ssh as they utilise different ports. (Plus ssh is encrypted) I used both via an ordinary bt infinity 80/20 connection and got virtually full bandwidth in both directions.

I suggest a VPN as well. Log into your router and hopefully there'll be VPN options there to play about with. Once it's set up on your router and laptop (and it's not that difficult - Google!) copying your files across to your server will be very straightforward. I know because I've got a VPN set up for similar reasons to the OPs.

Doesn't the share need to be synced both ways with bit torrent sync...what happens when you delete the photos on your phone? Does it delete them off your server ?

Like Dropbox?

I need to be able to copy a file from PC to server...not sync directories both ways...I understand that bit torrent sync as a toggle for sync all off...but this still means when I delete of PC it will delete off server...
