This annoys me when this happens, I am an administrator on my vista machine, I create a folder on the desktop, then go to share it in the advanced sharing in the permissions tab, I tick everyone to have full control.

Although when I go to the computer location via view workgroup computers on my xp machine, I can see my vista machine although when i go to double click it, the xp machine says I do not have permission ?

I'm only using the windows firewall in conjunction with XP, no norton security installed etc ? and the same with my vista unit.

P.s, the same thing happens to me on my xp to xp machine, although it asks me for a user name and password ?

The only thing that I have changed, is added a 2nd user area in xp and in vista although they are both administrators aswell ?

Hi Mazza

This is a Permissions and Trust Issue. The Vista Machine and the XP Machines do not trust each other in a Peer to Peer network.

You will need to create a User Account on each machine and connect to the other using it.

For example:
XP PC1 - User Dave
XP PC2 - also needs to know about "Dave" so create an account for Dave (Same Password also).

This will sort your trust issue between the machines

Sorry could you be a little more specific ?

I already have 2 user accounts on the vista machine and my own user account on the XP unit, also the make folder private box seems to be greyed out also and I can't untick it, I thought that if I had multiple users on the xp unit and i wanted to then do file and print sharing, that I would have to untick the box that said use simple file sharing and set the permissions that way, but that does not seem to be the case ?

Sorry for the quick Reply Mazza.

Have you installed LLTD on the XP machine? (Vista "finds" the XP computer better when it's installed.)

Make sure you are on the same workgroup. Vista and XP default to different workgroup names if you use the wizards to set up your home network.

Made sure that identical usernames with identical passwords are on both computers and that particular user has admin privileges on both machines?

Enable/CHECK "File and Printer Sharing" on both computers in the "Control Panel/Network Connections" section?

Make sure that such sharing is allowed through your firewall? (On the Windows Firewall, there should be an "Exception" for "File and Printer Sharing" which is CHECKED.)

Any probs, shout back

Hey, thanks for the quick reply

Although having the same user names and passwords on both pcs wouldnt that defi the object of having file sharing on different computers ?

I then came across another problem where my xp pc and my other xp laptop both running pro and NTFS file systems, it once again wouldnt allow me into my own folder, turns out the folder was private although the tick box was greyed out, and then when i went back to the sharing tab, all the boxes were greyed out :s

Turns out that I had to re take ownership of that folder by unticking use simple file sharing, navigating to the ownership section and taking ownership, and then re enabling use simple file sharing that the folder was no longer auto private and i could tick, or untick the box if i wanted

Now ill go back to the Vista OS and see what happens with your suggestion, ill let you know...thanks
