Ok so i have a linksys wireless adsl router/modem

to this is my pc connected by wire

and 3 other laptops connected by wireless

i have managed to create our own network, and the wireless laptops have connected to this wireless network and can access the internet

what im trying to do is be able to share folders accross the network, but im stuck on how to

i have made some of my folders available for sharing by right clicking, selecting sharing, and ticking the box that says share this folder on your network

but how do i access it from 1 of the laptops?? what do i need to do?

start>run> \\<computername> should show the shares on that computer. A lot of the time the browser doesn't work for one reason or another.

it says network path not found

also:

when i ping the ip it fails, so we cant see each other??

also im on xp pro, laptop is xp home, neither has a username/pass for the account, just admin account being used

would that make a difference?

you have a firewall blocking it then. Either that or wireless isolation mode blocking it but that would only block wifi to wifi, not wifi to wired.

also if your permissions are wrong you won't be able to access the shares but you can still see a list of them. To avoid any issues then turn on the guest account and give guest whatever permissions you want for the share.

ok ill try disabling windows firewall on my pc

laptop has norton (ewwwww) will try disabling all of that

also something else:

on my pc when i go to network places > view workgroup computers, i can see mine, and the other computer (laptop)  edit//but cant access it

ok disabled all firewalls, and i can now ping the laptop, and it can ping me fine

/edit

ok i can now connect to the laptop fine using start > run \\computername

and can download the shared files

BUT

it cant do the same to me

Sounds like your machine still has some form of firewall blocking the connection, as you can initiate connections, but not recieve them.

No ! Don't do that !

Give the world access to your files? Never a smart idea.

Better idea would be to allow file&print sharing in your firewall. No harder than ticking a box in the Windows firewall.

Take the time to learn about file sharing and permissions.

sorry it works, seems i forgot the name to my pc and was putting in the wrong name lol

just 1 thing - what should the wireless singal strength be like? the laptop is 1 floor down, so just has to go through the floor, it has low signal strenth, and i was downloadin from it on average about 1.73mb/sec which is about 16mbit?
