Ive just got a whole new rig, so im in the process of trying to move the files i want to keep from my old rig to my new one via LAN. The problem is that i just tried sharing the whole partitions, but when i went to my new rig to try access them, some areas were still denied to me, like program files and each user in the documents and settings folder.

Im not sure if this is because my old rig is XP pro, and my new rig is vista home premium 64bit, or just some sort of windows protection that requires them folders to be specificaly shared, instead of the whole drive.

Now to try and save me time im asking here if i do need to specificaly share those folders, and if there are any others have to share as well, because each time i switch from pc to pc, i have to unplug my monitor, and USB keyboard and mouse, and plug them in the other pc, and doing this each time is quite time consuming and annoying (due to my old rig restarting if i even gently brush up against the power cable).

have the same username/password set on each machine (both admin accounts obviously). now access the drive using admin shares...

\\pc\c$

will give you full access to the whole c drive without worrying about permissions.

turn off simple file sharing(tools->folder options -> view tab and untick it near the bottom) then go in through the admin share \\computername\c$ or whatever partition the data is stored on. Just need to know an admin account username and password for the computer you are getting the data from. All PC's have the admin share by default if im not mistaken. Although i mostly am :p

*Edit* beaten to it.. yet again!

that happens to me all the time as well. :p

edit: OP, i don't even know why you want access to "program files" anyway. you can't just copy over the files and expect them to work on a new machine. most apps need installing properly. :)

I dont intend to copy whole programs across, just the settings for the programs, like the bookmarks i use for opera, or my mIRC settings and scripts.

Thanks for the replys.

ah right, you'll find most apps will store settings like that in your profile. for example opera stores it's settings in

C:\Documents and Settings\marc\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile

i don't use mirc but you might find it does something similar.
