Well, I've got a shared room at uni. It's not so bad but we only have one internet point. We went to IT and asked if we could split it somehow but they said it's really hard to do. Apparently we can't just use a network splitter as it has to be over a secure network. They mentioned something about ad-hoc but not entirely sure what this is.

You got guys got any ideas how we could share the internet point between our two laptops? Prefrably without forking out loads of money but as a last resort...

Cheers guys

Internet point? You mean an RJ45 socket in the wall?
What hoops do you have to jump through to connect to it?

Aye I think so.

Well there a cisco 7912 ip phone that the normal lead connects into and the phone connects into the wall but it's a standard ethernet point on the wall and in the phone.

Does it work with either machine connected, or only one?
The 7912 ports are basically just switch ports, so you might get away with a switch rather than a router.

That much went without saying if you've only got one port. Know anyone with a switch (or router with >1 port) you could borrow?
