After a battery / electric shaver. I want one that gives the closest shave (or money back!)

I do use a razor but want a good battery / elec for when away. Any that you can recommend as being a very close shaver? Ta

All depends on your face. one shaver that works flawlessly for one person probably won't have the same effect on you.

Buy off Amazon/Argos etc, places that have no quibble returns policies and try a few out. Cheap ones will more often be worse than ones that are expensive. Usually you'll find you are replacing the blade unit every few months as opposed to every year or so.

I have a Braun series 7 pulsonic pro after having tried various brands and models from £50 up to £150. The 7 works best for me, and the blade lasts a full year. I use the clean and renew dock station thing once a week which keeps the blade well lubricated and cutting bits clean. The cleaning solution tanks are £12.50 for a pack of 3, and will last several months. The blade unit is £24. The battery lasts about 45 minutes total on the highest pulse setting.

They're generally useless unless you need to shave quickly yet badly. As much as it pains me to say, a disposable razer 'when away' will give you a better shave than an electric shaver.

There's a good shaving thread somewhere in GD which may be useful.

You must have used just the poor ones then, because that is not true at all. Personally, I used to be a manual shave guy for years. But in the end the convenience of a good electric vs the inconvenience of manual won me over.

I'm also in the market for a new electric shaver too, but I need one that's suitable for someone who suffers with severe acute eczema and, on top of that nightmare, extremely dry and irritable skin. I've tried the expensive Philisave ones with the balm system, and they're a total waste of money.

Any ideas?

By manual, do you mean a double edged razor or something from Asda?

Also, what is your 'good electric' razor because I think that's what he's after.

I've used to the braun and phillips ones and although they do the job they do not give a nice enough shave to be honest. However its all down to personal preference as to what you think a good shave is.
As suggested already for travel get some disposable ones instead.

I am loving gillette proshield, stocked up with about a 20 year supply of blades when they were £7 for a pack of 6 in superdrug.

Gillette Proshield and Wilkinson Sword Quattro or whatever they used to call them.

Already mentioned above.

Those things are awful, having used a Double edged razor for so long I had to use the latest Gillette Fusion thing, didn't really take much of the hair off and left my face in a bit of a mess.

Honestly I have had zero issues with either. Always got a smooth and clean shave. The only time this wasn't the case was when I forgot to replace the worn blade with a new one.

Again, all down to your own individual face, not everyone has the same result from whatever shaver they use. I get smooth results from electric, so convenience is trumps over anything manual.

You can return electric razors after using them? That makes choosing my new 'personal' groomer easier..

That can't be right, surely? :p
You are right m8
You cannot return used shavers etc ,from argos at least ,last time i bought one from there was clearly told no 14 day return on this item:)

I used to have a Braun which was ok but the blade didn't last long and the replacement was the same!

I was always a wet shave fan and couldn't get on with any electric razors. That was until I tried a Braun Series 7. My DE razor hasn't seen the light of day in about 6 months. I'm completely converted to the Braun. I have tried quite a few electric razors, both rotary and foil and they are not comparable to the Series 7. There is definitely an element of technique involved in getting an electric shave right too so it's not all down to the hardware. Also be aware that lots of reviewers will pitch all electric razors into the same league, comparing a £20 QVC offering to high end stuff. The Braun 7 is definitely in a different league.

Pros:
Really long battery life. Easily get at least 10-15 shaves on a charge.
Docking station charges and cleans it.
Well built and feels very solid.
Shaves better than any other electric razor I've tried. Also get less irritation and ingrown hairs when compared to using a blade.

Cons:
I was going to say price but over time it works out cheaper than the likes of a Mach 3 and negligibly more expensive than DE.

Like other my face is extremely sensitive. I also use Braun series 7 and have been for about 3 years and it does a smashing job when I do not have time. Get one with a clean and renew base and pop it in after a few uses and blade feels clean and lovely to use again.

It does not get as close as my DE shavers or cutthroat Feather. But when it does 90% of the job in 10% of the time, it's a great device.

I went single blade razor and never gone back to electric or multi blade. Only time I use trimmers is when shortening my beard while keeping some length to it for a style. Otherwise a good single blade razor is far faster, cleaner, longer lasting and easier to clean compared to electric or multi blade razers I find.

Just make sure to never shave against the grain, always shave down your face etc. Bad stubble rash otherwise.

Only shaving with the grain gives a rubbish shave with a DE razor, even a Mach 3 gives a better shave with the grain than them. The whole point in them is that you can shave against or across the grain while getting a much better shave with very little to no irritation :)
