Hey guys,

received my Mac Pro today and man its gorgeous. The issue I'm having though, is in 1440p it won't let me change the refresh rate (my monitor supports up to 240Hz), but when I downscale to 1080p I can change it.

Now, is this the Mac Pro or the cable I'm using to test out. Surely the cable? unless MP doesn't support it.

FWIW I have the MP model with the dual D500 GPUs.

Cheers guys!

Are you using the HDMI port or one of the mini-DP ports? What cable are you using?

yeah HDMI to HDMI. Its a budget cable from the rainforest, so im assuming it might be that.

IIRC it was DisplayPort 1.2 on the 'trashcan' which means you will be limited to 144Hz @ 1440p due to bandwidth.
HDMI was 1.4.

Edit - I'm going off rusty memory as it's been a long time since i've touched a trashcan, so this could entirely be wrong

That would be fine for me, 144Hz. For what this will be used for. But defiantly struggling at 60Hz here atm! :(

ah yeah, you definitely won't be able to do 1440p @ 120hz+ over the HDMI 1.4 port, the mini-DP should work though (not 240, but 144 should be OK).

so even a good quality cable won't do 144Hz at 1440p?

What monitor are you using? As you need to be using DisplayPort.

Its a Samsung one, will check the model in a bit.

So what cable do I need to get this to work at 144Hz?

Can't believe you actually did this.

You need your bump feeling

My bad. I do have the memory of a goldfish.

That is my excuse :p

Seriously though. Apologies.

Nothing to apologise for, you wanted it and you bought it. We all think you're potty for doing it though* :D

Out of interest, what's the full spec and how much was it?

*(I can't deny that only last year I was looking at these on eBay)

Haha. It runs Monterey really well actually. Perfect for my needs.

It’s nothing special. The 6 core variant, 16gb ram (which will be upgraded) dual D500 gpu and a 256 ssd.

I paid a little over the odds as it comes with a 2 year warranty and it’s in good nick. So it was £290!

I'd say that's very cheap for what you're getting but I'd be suspicious of any kind of warranty.

tbh @Feek there are many cheaper on eBay, it was purchased from CEX. so 2 year warranty with them, handy so any issues I can just pop into the Aberdeen store and take it from there!

Oh OK, that's fair enough, I thought they were a lot more than that.

some have good deals on eBay, with like 6 month warranty etc...

but if something was to go wrong its the hassle of shipping etc.. this avoids that, otherwise I don't know if I would go down the route of the MP. not 100% sure.
