Can anyone recommend a sheet metal fabricator?

I'm looking to get an internal panel made from 2mm aluminium, with folded tabs along three edges and a rolled edge on the last. Dimensions roughly 420 x 160mm.

best bet is to find one locally probably, then you can have a face to face and explain your design, rather than sending off for it

You'll have to be very lucky to find a local fabricator who will do this.

Most of these firms are SMEs (15+ people firms). They don't have the casual approach to take on odd jobs on the side from people walking in. They will only entertain other businesses on bigger projects.

You might be lucky to find one. But I needed some light fabrication work done and was virtually impossible to find one. Sometimes it's money, mostly it would be time. It takes a long time to make 1 off something, cheaper if they're building 5-6 units of the same and can use the same jigs/setup on all units.

One business quoted me a ridiculous price for it and it would have been cheaper to just buy entry level tools and do it myself.

catch someone on teabreak most engineering firms i go to would do it . offer em some beer money.

Maybe you were lucky to find one. But there aren't any independant-ish engineering firms around. Most have management and workforce and it would be a sackable offence for a worker to do side projects on "company time".

A mechanic friend of mine got fired from a main dealer after he was clocked doing repair work for a few too many friends. They allowed him to do his own car - put it up on the ramp after work and work for a few hours and perhaps family cars. But he started doing work on mates cars and pushing it too far. Boss let him go when he got pressure to cut back from HO.

Ran into this issue my self fabricating a custom back piece for a corsair 350d. After contacting a bunch of companies (generally rather nice people) It just ends up too expensive for a small one off piece.

In the end I used a scroll saw to cut out the piece and a vice + hammer to bend it into shape. Just be sure to print out a paper template and check it fits before cutting as it does take a lot longer compared to a CNC machine.

Here was the end result.

Nice work crypto. My piece should be simpler and if the cost is too much I'll be breaking out the tools myself. BTW nice finish what did you use?

Cheers, and not always bad breaking out the tools at least you feel like you've accomplished it your self. The finish is just aerosol self etching prime and a coat of satin black (closest match to the original corsair paint).

*If you do get a quote from those guys do let us know what it came to, could be useful at some point.
