Who played this game? We're still waiting on number 3.

I think Shenmue is probably one of the most underrated games of all time. I haven't met a single person who has played this game that didn't absolutely LOVE it. Unfortunately, I have met a lot of people who haven't played it.

Shenmue originally released on the Dreamcast, Shenmue II then released on the xBox, and we're still awaiting the 3rd installment.

It is an adventure, quest, QTE and battle style game. You play as Ryo Hazuki, after watching you father die in a martial arts fight, you seek out vengance for his death as well as answers to why. With cool quests like earning money, fighting, playing games, gambling, racing forklift trucks and much much more. If you haven't played, definitely try and check it out.

Those of you that have played it, what are your thoughts? Did you also love this game and feel it was underrated?

Hasn't yakuza taken over from this kind of ? I'd get yakuza 3 and 4 if you liked shenmue.

Yeah I'd love sega to bring the 3rd & give the 1st 2 a facelift & release them as a pack (in my dreams on pc :D) but at least on ps3 & xbox 360, I have yakuza 3 for ps3 still in it's wrapper lol, I played the demo but think the combat in shenmue on dreamcast was far better, was a nice down to earth enjoyable game.

As above, why the hell is this in the PC Gaming section.

And Shenmue III? BAHAHAHA! Even that Shenmue MMO game which has been in the works for like ever has a better chance of getting released!

And the combat in Shenmue is much better than the Yakuza series for the fact that it is much closer to the Virtua Fighter games. Yakuza is more of a simple brawler.

Yeah sorry about not being in console, I inherently went to PC Gaming. Ryo Hazuki made an appearance in that Wii game, so perhaps all is not forgotten?

The fight mechanics of this game were awesome. Buy scroll, learn move, practice move, master move. My favourite was catching a punch and breaking the shoulder. Awesome.

Definitely underrated, Shenmue was one of those few games with a virtual world you felt really could exist somewhere. The story and characters were amazing and very believable. Segas' best work imo, along with the Dreamcast.

Just a shame that we'll probably never see Shenmue 3 :(

Ahh Shenmue. Two of the best games I've ever played. An absolute masterpiece IMO, and the gameplay and storyline is genius.

The locations in the games are virtual representations of real life areas.

Great games. You saying this made me think of a Shenmue MMO, wonder if that would work....

There is supposively one that has been in development for a long time by Taiwanese developers. Google "Shenmue Online" and you will find some results.

yeah but the thing it actually felt believable too, like things happened there every day. It's hard to explain but some games today that have environments based on real life areas don't create that same atmosphere Shenmue had. I think it was down to the variation of different characters that were around, even those with absolutely no role in the story stood out as individuals living in the world and had their own distinct personalities.

That said, very few games actually try to create real life environments these days... there's usually been an apocalypse or something :p

Yeah one of the most advanced things for Shenmue and even to this day is the daily lives of the NPC's and the way they are programmed to work on a routine very akin to what real life people do. Every little thing is done in such great detail.

For example you visit the noodle shop or the butchers at any random hour during the day and they will be doing something differently, whether it is working behind the counter, sweeping the ground outside their business or closing up and walking home. Hell some of them you can even follow to their actual homes! That Chinese restaurant delivery guy with the glasses and bicycle, you can see him riding around or actually delivering food as well.

Shenmue and many other Dreamcast titles were really ahead for their time.
