Moffat ‘Appalled’ at No Gay Characters

Everett Canton Delware III (Mark Sheppard) wasn’t just an amazing supporting character in this year’s opener The Impossible Astronaut – his inception allowed Steven Moffat to address the one criticism that he ever took to heart.

In an interview with AfterElton Moffat said he was ‘appalled’ at the lack of gay or bisexual characters in his first season in charge because it didn’t feel like Doctor Who:

“I was thinking, I’m not like that at all. I would never have done that. So I was thinking, “Dammit, it’s the one criticism I’ve ever listened to. Good point, Doctor Who should always be…” It’s not because it’s politically and morally correct. It’s right for Doctor Who, isn’t it? It’s cheeky and off-centered. And fun.”

Bringing that sense of fun back Canton’s sexuality was devised as a way to make ‘a whole other life unfold in your head’ and also as a way to set the character apart from being just another agent to an agent more likely to side with the Doctor over the fiercely conservative Richard Nixon.

They are both gay.

So now you have me confused, and while I don't care if a character is gay or not, i am fed up being told utterly and pointlessly that they are. In their world of writing it appears any homosexual person must annunciate to every stranger they meet just how gay they are.
If I wanted the chap from the village, I'd be watching little Britian, not Sherlock, or Dr Who for that matter..

It would appear google lied to me.
I don't care either way.
I still feel the episodes are weaker as a result of intentional non-plot content totally unrelated to the scene.

What a final, such strong performances from the main cast!

Interesting.
Good old Molly, just wonder if Jim did a 'The Game' style dead of his own, expecting it to force Sherlock into a jump.

Moriarty is definitely dead. Initially Sherlock would be dead too but we know that A.C.Doyle "faked" his death when the readers had been really disappointed with the outcome in the original series so there we go!

What, the fact the episode was about a giant dog which you never saw in any of his flashbacks, and he plays a werewolf in another BBC TV show? You don't think there's an albeit subtle link?

No, not really. It's a completely different character and show. I think you're grasping at straws really.

Great episode tonight, was enthralled the whole way through. Will be interested to see how they explain it.

Awesome episode! I only started watching Sherlock last week and its by far one of the best things on tv, is a third series confirmed?

Well that was a bit of a mixture. I must admit it had me yawning a little and not too worried just before the end. The story will get interesting. ;)
