Chaps , thought I would come Over to GD for some help , always seems to get some sensible answers on here.

Need some help with working out a pro rata rate of pay please , I need to compare 2 different sets of hours but the same salary . Both are doing the same job , take it there is no out of hours premium both get 20 days annual leave and both are permanent contracts.

Employee A

Earns £25,000 a year but works Mon to Friday 9AM to 6 PM , he’s only paid for 40 hours and lunch breaks are not paid for . Easy calculation £25,000 / 52 / 40 = £12.02 per hour for 40 hours each 7 day week .

Employee B

Earns £25,000 a year but work 4 days on and 4 days off 12 hour shifts but paid for 11 . This encompasses an 8 day rotation. Not 7.

We need to work out the Pro Rata rate and hours for Employee B on a 7 day week compared to Employee A .

I’ve come up with all sort of answers but can’t definitively pinpoint an answer .

I got 12.45 too

365 days per year / 2 = 182.5 worked

182.5 x 11 hrs per day = 2007.5

25000/2007.5 = 12.45

4 on 4 off is 50% of the week. 3.5 days x 11 hours is 38.5 hours a week, plug that in to the 25,000 / 52 / 38.5 for direct comparison and I get £12.487/hr.

You would also need to pro-rata the holiday to hours as 11 hour days x20 is 220 hours of holiday paid but 8 hour days x20 days is only 160 hours of holiday

there aren't exactly 52 weeks per year

‘Thanks `steeps , 4 on 4 off is 50% of an 8 day week not a 7 day week though , where did you get 3.5 days from ?

4 on 4 off is just a ratio, in this case it's days worked vs days off. As a percentage it's 50% of the days in total so you can use that ratio or percentage to apply it to any time frame. If it was for a week it's 50% of the week (3.5 days), if it's for a year it's 50% of the year (182.5 days) just like for 8 days it's 50% of the days (4 days).

Alternatively you can rebase the calculation for Employee A:

25,000/(365/7*40) = £11.99 p/h. This would more fairly equate to Rotty's calculation for Employee B.

Either way I wouldn't want to be Employee A :D

‘Your a legend sir , thanks you .
