OK, im looking at a gti-6 at quite a cheap price. In the advert he states he has owned it for 2 1/2 years. I checked the reg on RAC car date checker and it says last owner change was 2000. So I texted him saying whats the catch?

This is his reply.

Ok. I'll talk you through it. I never recieved a v5 and forgot all about it. I have spoken to dvla yesterday and can confirm its all ok. They said just wait til new owner takes it and put straight into their name. I can tax if worried

Now should I be worried? :p

Its quite a distance from me, its not in the best condition but the price is awesome so seriously considering it.

ok, i ll give them a ring a bit later, totally off topic but that VBZ reg plate off one of your mr2's, is that a private plate as my brother scrapped a saxo with a VERY similar plate to that?

Hes had the car for 2 1/2 years not 6. There is no sign with the dvla that there has been a change of vehicle, this is why im asking. He said he ll get tax if I want him too, but how would he without V5? Im confused

Iv emailed the dvla, waiting for a response :) I have text HPI'ed it and it has come back fine. hmmmm

your main problem is that you may be buying it off the legit owner but not the registered keeper of the car.If he has not got the V5 how are you going to change the registration?

No V5, no buy imo.

The seller seems very matter of fact considering that for the past 2 1/2 years he's effectively been driving around in a car that legaly isn't actually his

Bet he got it off a mate, kept the car in his mates name so not to add another person to the owners list, his mate passes him the renewals for the tax, come sales time he can get more for the car cause its had less owners.

i dont use my v5 to get car tax. yes i use the reminder slip they send, but do you have to have that?

You don't get the reminder letter if you aren't the registered keeper, and the only way to tax it without is with the V5....

Leave well alone IMO.

I think though that it always says on the V5 that the registered keeper isn't necessarily the legal owner. So it could very well be legally his.

Surely this is counter productive as its likely to scare more potential buyers off then its possibly worth? As said, no v5 = no way I'd risk it.
