Shocking broadband speed - what can I do?

Sounds like a stuck profile to me as well, and you're syncing with G.DMT. I had similar issues with Virgin before, they had locked my configured profile to 7150 despite the fact that I was on an up to 20Mb deal. I eventually had enough evidence of their mistake to convince them, after which I was told that there'd be 14 days of no connectivity to fix it. >_< Left Virgin shortly thereafter.

If you want to try to get your actual phone line sorted, go ahead and do that. I'd speak to your actual broadband provider about the profile you're on though, see what they can do about that. For some reason Virgin told me to keep resetting my modem during the first 10 days of service, which as I realize now obviously told the exchange "issues on line - lower profile". Should've known, really, but they shouldn't have told me that. :P

G.DMT will give better results at slower line speeds (anything less than 8Mb, and you don't need ADSL2).

For example, my line was 46dB on G.DMT and 52 on ADSL2+

I'd swing by the local exchange and ask an engineer if they fancy helping you out as a hobble, or ask around and see if you know someone that knows someone.

Got some feelers out to find a tame BT engineer - theres one round the corner but don't know him and not going to door step him :)

Spoke the ISP, they ave said to change the router and see what happens - we've got the same Vigor 2700 in the office so I'll take that home for the weekend.

While I was on the phone he could see it was dropping the line every few minutes. I'm sure its the outside wiring but we have to make 100% that it's not the equipment in case BT stuff me with a call out charge.

I doubt anything will change but will put the replacement router right next to the socket and it's away from any electricals that might cause interference. Leave it go until Monday and if no better than there really is no more I can do and it's up to BT. Going to knock the neighbours and ask if they've ever had issue and what their DL speed is.

So last night I changed the router to our oldest router in work - a Vigor 2800v.

Tried BT speed test this morning and got this

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3964 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps

So it looks like the V2700vg might have a problem. Going to switch the 2700 back in and try the test again tomorrow morning. If it's slow again the only thing it could be is the router.

Looks like the outside line might be OK afterall.

Kind of surprised this latest test indicates the router is the thing causing the drop outs etc.

Yeah try the old one and see what happens. Although I'd still want to know why you were on a 135kbit IP profile despite connecting at over 2mbit.
