Why is it that modern styles of shoes last so poorly?

Some classic tan barker brogues that I bought for about £135 and wear 3-4 days a week still look absolutely brand new despite being 3 years old.

In that time I have got through 2-3 pairs of Merrel/Rockport shoes that cost about £95 each. Bits just start to fall off the side and holes form in various places. Am I to assume that these are simply mass made in China for £5 each and one is paying just for the label?

If only one were able to wear brogues to lectures without looking out of place!

I couldnt agree more, i wore a pair of Loakes to work for 2 years everyday in a shop and in the end they gave up. But merrils dont last a winter

I find that most of my shoes last for abolutely ages

suppose it depends on what you mean by modern styles though
