Shooting fashion abroad - going to NYC in summer

Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help here so I don't make any rookie mistakes. I'm going to New York this summer for a few days and I'd love to get some shooting done, though unfortunately no girlfriend to come and be de facto model. In terms of model releases etc., can someone guide me through the basics of when I need them etc. and where I can shoot in terms of public/private land shooting law, including members of the public in the background etc.?

Yeah that's what I'm asking basically in terms of what releases I need to get and possible permits on locations and restrictions on what's included in the backgrounds etc.
