I'm shooting a wedding in August in Cyprus so we're looking at some NDs. Has anyone used variables before and if so are they any good?

Otherwise what should we be looking at for that kind of sun, bearing in mind it's for film (ie we can go down to 50) and it'll be for our 50mm 1.4.

They're ok, i don't think they're any worse than stacking filters, assuming you can't just take a select of standard ND filters and choose the right one at the time.

Depends what time of day you'll be shooting, what aperture you're planning on using (i.e are you going to want to shoot wide open) and the maximum shutter speed of your camera etc

I assume you're thinking about using Velvia 50 since it's the only decent ISO 50 film i can think of for sale anymore. That won't like harsh bright sun, even with an ND filter. I had a nightmare with EBX-100 in Greece last year, even with filters it was still so bright anytime out of the 'golden hours'. Half the stuff i took in midday sun just had blue shadows.

Sorry, just to clarify, by film I meant video :).

And yes, on the 50mm I wouldn't want to go much above f2.5 and really I want as low a shutter speed as possible.
