Recently I have found myself wanting to shoot at night whilst it's raining/snowing and using flash just seems a totally fruitless exercise as it just iluminates the rain/snow in big blobs. ISO1600/3200 performance is poor on my 10D so i find myself not shooting at all.

Are there anything I can do or is it just a case of tough cookie?

Example of the problem below

[Edit] Could have sworn I was in photography... would someone please hit the report to mod button, can't do it to my own thread. Cheers

What's the 0-60 time on one of those things? I like the paintjob too.

Is the 10D a type of engine? Try getting it up to 7000, it might perform better further up the range.

;)

The only way I can think of getting round it would be to have an off-camera flash. Placed right, this should prevent the big blobs right in front of your lens but you might still get a few further out depending on where the flash is placed.

Could you make a super massive lens hood/umbrella out of card and hold it over? This would at least shelter the lens from the big, close-up blobs.

what i was going to suggest, then snow can float past yours lens.

yeah i think that would probably be ideal solution, unfortunately it'd require a press pass at most events.

I think a 1D mkIII @ ISO6400 and a 70-200 2.8IS is the way forward :p

Slightly OT but i just had a look at your photoblog, olv. Great stuff. Are you in Whistler now? You working out there or something?

Some fantastic shots just on the first page;

Thanks :)

Yeah i've been in whistler for the season. Not working fortunately, just skiing a lot. It's the telus ski and board festival at the mo, so lots of comps on. that shot was from the big air comp last night but it was raining, so hence the thread. Hopefully it'll be clear next saturday for the final big air comp.

I was in Whistler 2 yrs ago in May and there was no snow anywhere !
I was like ?!?!  ?!?,

But I must agree there are some cracking photographs on the site :)

How much is that setting you back if you don't mind me asking? Im ever so slightly jealous. :)

A season in a canadian/american resort will set you back anywhere between £4000 and £7000 with flights/lift pass/accomodation/equipment etc depending on how frugal you can be. I wouldn't like to add up how much i've spent :p

A season in Europe could be done for under £4000 fairly easily, flights/season pass/accomodation and food are significantly cheaper.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to work next season :( ;)

I was over here in March and April 2 years ago Puz and there was plenty of snow left up the mountain in May. My friends that were still out here had powder days in the first couple of weeks of May. Of course there isn't any snow in the village but then it is about 20 degrees.

Cheers for the positive comments everyone
