You lot aren't going to believe this (it's true and you know what they say about truth being stranger than fiction):-
Yesterday a shoplifter entered the co-op, made his way into the kiosk and walked out with a few bottles and didn't pay for them and he came back again today and tried the same thing. I've even seen people just walk into the shop, grab a fridge pack of beer or cider and walk out without paying for them.
Are shoplifters getting brave as they know they're being watched on camera and proper customers who tell the staff that they've suspected a shoplifter?

Once I saw a shoplifter trying to rob some meat from the chillers and last year, we didn't have any security for over eight weeks. But you can always tell a shoplifter becuase they kick off when stopped at the doors and asked to open their bags.
But I wouldn't know what to look for unless a customer tells me they're suspecting a shoplifter (they're usually right). Recently, the same shoplifter came in twice in ten minutes on a late shift so the shop had to close early and I've seen what explict4u has seen and I even saw somebody just walk in off the street, get a ten pack of Strongbow (I don't do cider but somebody might have wanted it) and walk out without paying for it.

They usually go for the high value items like meat joints, fridge packs or bottles of wine but d'you know how embarrasing to help a customer by telling them where something is, only to find out that they're a shoplifter later?
How am I to know?

calling the police and they likely wouldn't bother to come out anyway.

Exactly. But if and when they do turn up, it's usual four hours later (do the real police work on a part time basis as we rarely see them on the streets where they should be and not stuck behind some desk) and if you report an armed seige, they're out in force m with armed police surrounding the area, helecopterss in the air and with police dogs within ten ,minutes.

The same guy in the OP's now looking at burgalary now because he went behind the till and he came back agaon yesterday morning to try the samething but he didn't get away with anything this time. Some prat working on the kiosk door left a big hole in it so anybody can just stick their arm through the hole and unlock the door.
There's also the matter of:-
1. keeping the back gate open for the delivery drivers/food pick ups/Hermes lorry all day. An armed robber might be in wait and then take the chance (it's only a matter of time).
2. somebody looking over your shoulder while you enter the pin number to go round the back area.

Us retail workers're expected to
Just stand there and take verbal abuse and not answer back
Be professional
give service with a smile
at all times but we can only take so much. for so long.
This afternoon, one of the till operators was told to Eff off by a customer who wanted a certain brand of ciggie but couldn;t have it so he told her to eff off. The customer might always be right (are they ####) but it does'nt give them the right to abuse staff or talk down to them
I've even had one customer say to me 'didn't you hear that?' when the bell for another till operator was sounded.
