My OH takes an electric moped to work - works great, super cheap to run, no issues etc. But with the first winter coming in, the darker mornings/nights, cold weather, rain and ice put both a physical and metaphorical dampener on it, so we're looking at short-mid term car solutions.

There's an Enterprise car club on our road and a few others nearby but they're crazy expensive as she only drives 12 miles each way but needs the car for ~10 hours. That'd be like £80 per day, she may as well get taxis.

Ideally we'd have something for 6 months max, maybe even monthly rolling, with all-inclusive insurance etc, but it looks like anything under 12 months is super expensive.

Electric preferably as already have another EV and charger. Any ideas?

Doubt you'll find much that'll be 'cheap motoring' for 6 months all inclusive.

Maybe buy a cheapish EV and sell it in the spring if you don't want it anymore.

It's expensive unless it's part of a big corporate agreement. My wife has a rolling monthly/28 day thing with Enterprise which I think costs her employer about £350.

I'd agree with just getting a banger, worst case scenario she has the moped as a backup. 24 mile round trip on a moped in winter doesn't sound much fun tbh.

Auto trader, input post code, distance 10 miles, max price £1,500, minimum £1,000, look for 12 months MOT and as much service history as you can get. Buy on condition and history rather than mileage alone. Buy a good car and you’ll get what you paid for it in April next year.

One of the issues with bangernomics is we live in a clean air zone and would have a £9 daily charge (paid manually) for anything non-compliant.

Most clean air zones allow petrol cars from late 2005 onwards. Check the exact requirements for that zone.

EDIT: I assume this is a Bristol clean air zone?

  • Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol vehicles, roughly 2006 upwards
  • Euro 6 diesel vehicles, roughly end of 2015 onwards

There is also a checker on that page for any number plate.

Until recently you had ONTO and Elmo, now only Elmo. Cheapest is an MG ZS closely followed by a Fiat 500, but in all honestly buy a 22kWh Zoe (with a battery lease) and use that, you'll likely lose nothing other than insurance costs.

Are the journey times going to be much greater in a car ? more problematic parking - have you investigated making scooter safer like winter tyres
(maybe diddums has advice)

Have you tried asking your local taxi firm what the price would be if you booked them daily for the commute each way? They might be prepared to offer a reasonable discount.
