should a dynamic resolution option be standard in games

Got shadow of war today (pretty good game so far)

When I booted it up I set all settings to max at 4k and then set dynamic resolution to 60fps.

So far I have not seen a single drop below 60. In the benchmark its a solid 60 as well. (I'm running a 1080 by the way)

The same thing happened with titanfall 2.

I think more games should have this option as it is less messing about for people especially those with lower end machines.

Its pretty much a set and forget option and nothing else needs tweeking afterwards

I admit it doesn't seem to work in SLI (go figure)


So should more games include this option?
 
Nope as all it does is lower the resolution to boost FPS so you lose detail. Yet another MS failure around DX12 as they refuse to spend real time money & coding skills on proper PC optimisation as XB1 is their main concern. Win 10 PC gaming is just an annoyance to MS as Steam cannot be broken market share wise & MS cannot profit from PC gaming despite owing the OS due to corporate internal politics mistakes made in 2007-8 forever blocking Steamworks backend from talking to the Xbox Live infrastructure.

I didn't notice that much of a drop in quality.
Going by the built in bench mark it seems to drop when there's loads of orcs on screen and in game in usually concentrating on blocking then wondering how low the resolution has dropped

Microsoft didnt develop this game and i dont think it even uses dx12.

My point is that it's good for people with lower end hardware who want to load up a game and play it with out worry

Win 10 = DX12 any game on there is using that! There is also a Win 10 MS Store version which runs via Xbox Live instead of Steamworks & is Play Anywhere so you own the game on both Win 10 & Xbox 1. As this game is using DX12 that is why you see the Dynamic Resolution option as its a feature of Win 10 DX12 only for now.

However, if it was an option as standard, I can see a scenario where games are released with even less optimisation than they are now, as they know dynamic resolution will pick up the slack. Beyond that, resolution makes a huge difference in image fidelity, I'd much rather play at my native resolution and turn down some settings then crank up settings and sacrifice my resolution.

It's not a dx12 game.
There is a dynamic resolution options on titan fall 2 which again is not a dx12 game.

You do not have to buy it from the windows store. I bought it for steam.

Remember Microsoft didnt develop the game.

I spent a lot on this pc to get the best out of every game I play. Also because I wanted this pc to last me a long while.
However after so much messing about with poor ports over the past few years I just want to be able to start a game and play it a locked 60fps without messing about.

I also think there will always be devs who don't optimise properly. With the amount of pressure from the big publishers to get games out as quick as possible.

Its quite funny. I posted this same question on a facebook group consisting of mostly console players and they want this option however here it seems like people would rather just have the job done properly in the first place and I admit I would love for every game that comes out to have full SLI support and run like a dream on every setup

I'd be happy if games would just detect the correct resolution on start :o

I'm always switching between playing on pc (ultrawide) and my tv, always forget which one it was last set to.
 
No, I don't like it. I don't want my game dynamically adjusting anything on the fly. I am old school I suppose, and like tweaking my settings to get the frame rate I want and then leaving it. Also I am not so fussed about "reflection AA" and shadows and will lower those first, but like view distance to be high and I don't have that control with a dynamic setting. I'd also prefer to lower settings and stick to my native resolution anyway.
 
Dynamic resolution doesn't change the settings, it just changes the resolution

Funnily enough.

It often works well enough on PS4 Pro that people have to take a screenshot and 'pixel count' to tell the difference between true 4k and 1800p
